Tutorial 6

This document contains 4 questions about synchronous generators. Question 1 asks for the speed required for an 8-pole generator to produce 60 Hz voltage. Question 2 asks for the frequency range of a variable speed dc motor driving a 4-pole generator. Question 3 asks for the rating of a Y-connected generator if reconnected in delta. Question 4 asks for the open-circuit voltage of a generator if its frequency and field current are changed.

Tutorial # 5

Q1

At what speed must an eight-pole synchronous generator rotate in order to generate a voltage with a frequency of 60 Hz?

Q.2 A dc motor is used as a prime mover for a synchronous generator in order to obtain a variable-frequency supply. If the speed range of the motor is 820 to 1960 r/min and the generator has four poles, what is the obtainable frequency range of the output voltage?

Q.3 A 250-kVA 1260-V Y-connected synchronous generator has its armature winding reconnected in delta. Determine the machine rating when Delta-connected (i.e., kVA, IL, and VL ).

Q.4 The phase voltage of a 60-Hz synchronous generator is 4600 V at a field current of 8 A. Determine the open-circuit voltage at 50 Hz if the field current is 6 A. Neglect saturation.
