Prob Assignment#2

This document contains 5 probability and stochastic processes problems as an assignment with deadlines of October 20th for DL students and October 18th for regular students. Problem 1 asks about the probability of rain on consecutive days given the individual daily probabilities. Problem 2 asks about the probability of a toy being defective depending on whether it is an authentic or pirated version. Problem 3 considers the probability of a cure from a drug given its success rate and the chance of side effects. Problem 4 deals with the probability a multiple choice answer was known versus guessed by the student. Problem 5 concerns the probability of an insurance policy holder having an accident based on their age group.

Probability & stochastic Processes (MA 3005) Assignment#2 Deadline:

For DL Students: 20th October For Regular Students: 18th October

Problem 1:
On any day the chance of rain is 25%. The chance of rain on two consecutive days is 10%. Given that it is raining today, what is the chance of rain tomorrow? Given that it will rain tomorrow, what is the chance of rain today?

Problem 2:
An expensive electronic toy made by Acme Gadgets Inc. is defective with probability 10 3 .These toys are so popular that they are copied and sold illegally but cheaply. Pirate versions capture 10% of the market, and any pirated copy is defective with probability with probability . If you buy a toy, what is the chance that it is defective?

Problem 3:
Patients may be treated with any one of a number of drugs, each of which may give rise to side effects. A certain drug C has a 99% success rate in the absence of side effects, and side effects only arise in 5% of cases. However, if they do arise then C has only a 30% success rate. If C is used, what is the probability of the event A that a cure is effected?

Problem 4:
Suppose a multiple choice question has c available choices. A student either knows the answer with probability p, say, or guesses at random with probability 1 - p. Given that the answer selected is correct, what is the probability that the student knew the answer?

Problem 5:
An insurance company knows that the probability of a policy holder's having an accident in any given year is if the insured is aged less than 25, and if the insured is 25 or over. A fraction of policy holders are less than 25. What is the probability that (a) a randomly selected policy holder has an accident? (b) a policy holder who has an accident is less than 25?
