Project Ideas and Links

This document provides several potential project ideas for an Additional Mathematics class. It lists 14 specific project topics, such as studying fractals, designing a dipstick to measure gas tank volumes, analyzing factors that influence tin can design, and modeling water fountains. It also provides links to additional math project resources and details on submitting project marks to CXC. Some of the proposed projects involve using calculus and geometry to analyze real-world scenarios, develop mathematical models, or solve design problems.

SBA Topics 2010-2011

Instructions: Read carefully the following projects. Choose one project. 1. Fractals are a class of mathematical shapes that possess some form of self- similarity. Self similarity occurs when a structure has a repeating pattern of smaller and smaller images of the whole embedded in it. The shape you will be studying starts from an equilateral triangle with side length 1. The rule that define it is as follows Take any side and split it into 3 equal pieces. On the middle piece, construct an equilateral triangle that points outwards. This is repeated a number of times. Your task is to (i) Draw the shapes generated by applying the rule 3 times (ii) Find the exact formulae that will give the area of the shape generated after n applications of the rule. (iii) Describe with justification what happens to the area as n gets larger. (iv) Generate your own shape up to n=k. Include the rule you applied to generate the shape.

2. Gas Stations very rarely run out of petrol. This is due partly to efficient deliveries but also to precise stock control. Each type of petrol (premium unleaded, super unleaded, diesel) is stored in an underground tank and the amount left in each tank is carefully monitored using a dipstick. Your problem is to design the calibration on a dipstick. Consider the following:The height ,say , left in the tank can be easily measured. However the volume will be proportional to the cross-sectional area not the height. Suppose the cross section is elliptical. Your task is to find the relationship between area, and height, and so provide a ready method to convert height to area. (i) Show that (ii) Show that the area of the sector OAB is given by ) (iii) Show that the area of the triangle OAB is ( (iv) Deduce the area of the cross section of gas and express this as a fraction of the complete cross sectional area of the tank. Consider an alternative shape for the storage of the gas tank. How would the height (calibration) change.

3. Tin cans come in various shapes and sizes, but what factors influence their design? In particular, is minimising the area of tin used to make a can an important factor? Suppose a manufacturer wishes to enclose a fixed volume , using a cylindrical can. The height of the cylinders denoted by ,and the radius of the cylinder can section by (i) Write a function for the surface area of the can. (ii) Determine what happens to the surface area as the radius increases. (iii) Determine what happens as the radius tends to zero. (iv) Find the values of which minimizes the surface area? (v) Consider an alternative tin shape, with justifications, does your result support the argument that minimising surface area is a key factor in the design of tin cans?

4. Water fountains add beauty and serenity to any place. Imagine there are a pairs of water fountains along a row. Your task is to (i) Find a mathematical model to describe the water curve. (ii) Which are the main variables to control the shape of the water curve? (iii) Consider you have to regulate the water fountains so that each pair of water jets lands on the same spot. How could you do that? (iv) What is the limit of regulation so that the water jets do not fall outside the fountain?
