Nerve cells are like telephone wires. They receive and send messages. The brain is like the telephone exchange where messages are received and sent. Nerve cells are like incoming and outgoing telephone lines. Nerves link every part of the body to a central system called the brain. Nerves from the region of the head and the neck join the brain directly. 1. The sensory nerve cells carry signals from the sense organs to the spinal cord and brain. These messages are information about such things as temperature, smell, colour or pressure. 2. Motor nerve cells send signals from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands. These are the signals that make the muscles move. 3. Connecting nerve cells pass signal between the sensory nerve cells and the motor nerve cells. These nerve cells are in the brain and the spinal cord. Nerves from other parts of the body join each side of the spinal cord, which leads to the brain. There are three kinds of nerves: organ system
