Communication Lecture 1

The document discusses several topics related to university education and engineering communication. It emphasizes that universities want students who can turn information into knowledge, not just gather it. When conveying an idea, one should state the idea, provide an explanation, and show evidence using data, scientific principles, or documented research. The document also notes that plagiarism and misrepresenting others' work as one's own are academic offenses. Engineering communication differs from other types as it focuses on getting information across quickly using lists, tables, and avoiding figurative language or direct quotes. Critical thinking in engineering design involves looking at problems from multiple perspectives, generating solutions and criteria to evaluate them, justifying choices with logic and evidence, and reflecting on past actions

Friday, Saturday 14 Universities dont want mere hunters and gatherers of information; they want people who can

turn information into knowledge Nancy Schmidt

How to convey an idea:

1. State the idea 2. Explanation 3. Show evidence Three kind of evidence: Data developed by you or found through research Scientific principle Research documented properly

Documentation Problems occur when the use of intellectual Property is not acknowledged appropriately.
It shall be an offence for a student knowingly: d) to represent as ones own any idea or expression of an idea or work of another in any academic examination or session test or in connection with any other form of academic work, i.e. to commit plagiarism. f) to submit any academic work containing a purported statement or fact or reference to a source which has been concocted. g) Having someone else edit your work for you

Engineering Communication differs from other kinds of communication in that It gets information across as quickly as possible
Lists and tables are frequently used Paragraphs are not considered better writing than lists Figurative Language is never used Direct quote is rarely used

NO METAPHORS NO SIMILES NO USE OF THE WORDS green OR friendly added to a noun to indicate a design direction e.g. user-friendly

5 Critical thinking abilities in the Engineering Design Process

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ability to look at a problem from multiple perspectives Ability to generate a number of viable solutions Ability to generate criteria for choosing optimal solutions Ability to justify the choice with logic and evidence Ability to reflect to analyze strengths and weaknesses of past actions/decisions and great strategies to build on strengths and overcome weaknesses.
