De Sauty Bridge

The document describes De Sauty's bridge, which is used to determine the capacitance of an unknown capacitor. It consists of two capacitors, two variable resistors, a signal generator, headphones, and connecting wires arranged in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. The capacitance of the unknown capacitor (C2) can be calculated using a known capacitor (C1), along with the variable resistor values, using the formula C2 = R1 x C1 / R2. The procedure balances the bridge by adjusting R2 while R1 is varied, noting the resistor values, to calculate C2 at different points. Precautions like insulation of wires and checking connections are mentioned.

De Sautys bridge
Aim :- To compare the capacities of two condensers (or ) to find the capacitance of the
given condenser, by using De Sautys bridge.

Apparatus :- Two condensers, two resistance boxes or two resistance pots of 10 KHz ,
Signal generator, head phone and well insulated connecting wires.

Formula :-

Capacity of a unknown capacitor C2 =

R1 x C1 F R2

Where C1 is the capacity of the known capacitor. R1 and R2 are the variable non- inductive resistors.

Description :- The De Sautys bridge is an A.C Bridge works on the principle of

Wheat stones bridge . This bridge is used to determine the capacity of an unknown capacitor C2 in terms of the capacity of a standard known capacitor C1. Here R1 and R2 are non - inductive resistors . R1, R2 ,C1 and C2 are connected in a Wheat stones bridge as shown in the figure-1. When the bridge is balanced, the ratios of impedances are equal as given below.

Z1 Z = 3 Z2 Z4

1 1 j C 1 j C 2 = R1 R2

C2 R = 1 C1 R2

Procedure :- The connections are made as shown in the figure. The resistance R1 and a
condenser C1 are in series in one branch of the bridge and a resistance R2 and another capacitor C2 are in series in another branch. The A.C signal generator frequency is adjusted to a fixed value of 1 KHz or below, which is convenient to our ear.

A resistance is unplugged in R1 and the resistance R2 is adjusted till the sound in the head - phone is reduced to zero level . The value of R2 is measured with a multi-meter and noted. While measuring the resistances, they should be in open circuit. The above process is repeated for different values of R1 and the values are noted in the table . When the hum in the head phone is at zero level , then the time constants of the upper and the lower braches of Wheat stones bridge equal i.e. C1R1 = C2R2 .

C2 =

R1 x C1 F R2

Precautions :- 1) The connecting wires should not be in contact with the experiment
table. 2) The wires are checked up for continuity .

Result :-
