Fallacy of Composition: Arzaga Buenaflor

The document defines and provides examples of the fallacy of composition. The fallacy is committed when one incorrectly infers that something is true of the whole based on the properties of parts of the whole. It gives examples where it is incorrectly concluded that cats are colorless because atoms are, humans are invisible because cells are, and 4 is odd because 1 and 3 are odd when considering them separately rather than jointly as a whole.

FALLACY OF COMPOSITION

ARZAGA ; BUENAFLOR

Definition/s:
The fallacy of composition is committed when: one takes JOINTLY what should be taken SEPARATELY.

a CONCLUSION is drawn about a whole

justification provided for the inference.

based on the FEATURES OF ITS CONSTITUENTS when, in fact, no

one infers that something is true of the whole from the fact that it is true of SOME PART of the whole or even of every proper part of the whole.

Example # 1 Atoms are colorless. Cats are made of atoms. So, cats are colorless.

Example # 2
Human cells are invisible to the naked eye. Humans are made up of human cells. Therefore, humans are invisible to the naked eye.

Example # 3 The numbers 1 and 3 are both odd. But 1 and 3 are 4. Therefore, the number 4 is odd.
