Ignoring The Issue

This document discusses the fallacy of ignoring the issue, which can take several forms such as arguing irrelevant points, evading the original question, or shifting the focus of discussion. Examples are provided to illustrate politicians or debaters avoiding answering a direct question by giving an eloquent but irrelevant response. Another example shows how accusing an opponent of an incorrect view can deflect from substantive arguments. In total, 8 different forms of this fallacy are outlined that involve appealing to emotions, popularity, or other logical fallacies instead of addressing the core issue.

prove or disprove the point

Example:
Ex1: Yonardo is a native of a far-flung interior barrio; Therefore, he knows nothing about the underlying principles of politics. Reasoning: Just because he came from a province doesnt mean that he does not know anything about politics

Ex2: In a press conference, a political

candidate is asked a pointed, specific question about some potentially illegal fundraising activity. Instead of answering the allegations, the candidate gives a rousing speech thanking all of his financial supporters. The speech was eloquent and moving, but shifted the focus from the issue at hand.
Reasoning: Did not answer the original question

Ex3: Evolutionists think that everything

came about by random chance. How could that be?

Reasoning: Most evolutionists think in terms of natural selection which may involve incidental elements, but does not depend entirely on random chance. Painting your opponent with false colors only deflects the purpose of the argument.
