Summary The evaluation of the media center took place on September 17, 2012. It was based upon the Georgia DOE 2012 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric. The media center scored Exemplary in 7 areas, Proficient in eleven areas, and Basic in two areas. Explanation The exemplary strengths of the media center are in the following categories: Category 1 -Student Achievement and Instruction The Library Media Specialist and teachers collect and use student data to design activities that will lead to student achievement. The library media program supports instructional strategies and learning activities that meet individual needs. Category 3 - Facilities, Access, and Resource The media center has a flexible schedule. The media specialist uses interactive instructional technology and streams video throughout schools. There are some resources that are available outside of school for the use of students. All media resources are efficiently utilized.
Areas that need improvements (recommended actions): Category 2 Staffing Our media center is shared by the middle school and high school. We have only media specialist who provides for the needs of both schools. Employing a part-time library media paraprofessional or another media specialist may increase the use and circulation of the media center. Category 4 Administrative Support The media specialist and media center could benefit from staff support. The school principal and district administrators can take an active role in encouraging teachers to integrate library media resources into the curriculum. The local board can assist in implementing and consistently updating the library media policy. Category 5 - Staff Development There are not many opportunities available for the library media specialist to enhance her professional knowledge or for her to provide information and technology literacy skills to teachers. The media specialist should be able to participate in various professional development options. She should also be able to hold meetings with teachers and administrative staff to share information and instructional technology skills.
