Penstock Embedded Design

The document discusses the design of an embedded penstock between two bends of a hydropower project. It includes calculations of longitudinal stresses on the penstock from Poisson's effect and temperature changes. It also describes buckling checks performed on the penstock using formulas from E. Amstutz. The critical buckling pressure is calculated to be 74,881.84 kg/m^2, which exceeds the overburden soil pressure of 7,200 kg/m^2 for the planned 4m depth of embedment. A table summarizes the input parameters and results of the buckling analysis for two sections of the embedded penstock.

EMBEDDED PENSTOCK LONGITUDINAL STRESSES

The main longitudinal stresses for embedded penstock at Between Surge Tank and Bend 3 are as follow : Longitudinal Stress at Point Before Power House Inlet 1. Poissons effect stress

t 3 = t
Where:

t3

= Stress due to Poissons effect (kgf/cm2) = Poissons effect ratio of steel (0.3) = Circumferential stress (kgf/cm2)

P s ois on'seffect = 0.30 Location bend 1 - bend 2 bend 2 - bend 3 section 1 2 h (kg/m) 9,365,073.53 13,220,168.07 t3 (kg/m) 2,809,522.06 3,966,050.42

2. Temperature stress

t 2 = E T
Where:

t2
E T

= Stress due to temperature change (kgf/cm2) = Coefficient of linear expansion (1.2 x 10-5 /C) = Elastic Modulus of steel (2.1 x 106 kgf/cm2) = Temperature change (20C)

Temperature stress : = 1.20E-05 /C E= 2.10E+06 kg/cm

BUCKLING CHECK For buried pipe, Section 1 (between bend 1 and bend 2) Stress due to external pressure and critical buckling pressure is calculated using E. Amstutz formula

Where F N t rm ko = Yield point of material, 5,079.90 kg/cm2 = Circumferential direct stress at deformed pipe shell, iterated = Penstock thickness, 1.0 cm = Penstock radius to center of shell, 113.1 cm =gap between concrete and external surface of pipe, 0 by means of grouting

With N calculated, pk can be determined by following equation:

N 0.0004 112.5 + 2.31 106

pk =

N rm r * 1 + 0.35 m F * N t t Es 1,351.61 = 113.1 113.1 5, 079.90 1,351.61 1 + 0.35 3 3 2.31 106 2 = 11.23 kg/cm
pk 11.23 = SF 1.5 = 7.49kg/cm 2 = 74,881.84 kg/m 2

pall =

Soil density,

Depth of embedded penstock is designed to be not more than 4 meters Then Overburden stress at top of penstock = x H = 7,200 kg/m2 lower than the allowable buckling pressure, pall ( 74,881.84 kg/cm2)
