Tutorial 1

This document contains 6 questions regarding digital communication concepts like signal sampling, pulse trains, low pass filtering, and Nyquist sampling rate. Question 1 asks about recovering a signal multiplied by a pulse train by passing it through a low pass filter. Question 2 is about sampling a bandpass signal and determining the maximum time between samples. Question 3 shows how an impulse function can be stretched in width by passing it through a filter. Question 4 asks to find Nyquist sampling rates for two signals. Questions 5 and 6 are about determining acceptable sampling frequency ranges for given bandpass signals.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION (10B11EC511) TUTORIAL SHEET-1

Q1. A signal x(t) is multiplied with a pulse train of period Ts sec and pulse width of sec. (a) Prove that this signal x(t) can be recovered from its sampled value after passing through low pass filter (LPF). Also determine the high cut-off frequency of LPF. Solve this problem using time domain expression of x(t). (b) Solve above problem in frequency domain and also show the Fourier transform of sampled signal. ( ) ( ) ( ) is sampled byQ2. The band-pass signal ( ) an impulse train ( ) ( ) (a) Find the maximum time between samples, Ts, to ensure reproduction without error. ( ) ( ). (b) Using the result obtained in (a), obtainedan expression for ( ) (c) Obtained an expression for the LPF output used for reconstruction if filter bandwidth is . (d) If ( ) ( ) then obtain an expression for the filter output. Q3. Show that an impulse function ( ) can be stretched to have a width by passing the impulse function through a filter ( ) . Show that this operation is identical with integrating the impulse for sec, that is, that the output ( ) is given by ( ) { ( )

Q4. Find the Nyquist sampling rate and the Nyquist sampling interval for the following signals. (a) 10 Cos (50 t) * Cos (80 t) (assume low pass signal) (b) 10 Cos (50 t) * Cos (80 t) (assume band pass signal

Q5. A band pass signal has a spectral range that extends from 250 to 258 MHz. Find the acceptable range of sampling frequency fs. Q6. A band pass signal has a center frequency f0 and it extends from f0-4 KHz to f0+4 KHz. The signal is sampled at a rate fs=20 KHz. As the center frequency varies from 15 KHz to 55 KHz. Find the ranges of f0 for which the sampling rate is adequate.
