Drawing Spring in AutoCAD Without Helix Command

To draw a spring in earlier versions of AutoCAD since the Helix command was not available: 1. Draw a 5x5 rectangle and extrude it to a height of 5 to use as a reference cube. 2. Use the Arc tool to draw arcs and rotate one arc. 3. Draw a small circle at the end of one arc and extrude it along the arc to form a spiral link. 4. Union the links and copy them above each other to form a basic spiral spring representation.

In earlier versions since AutoCAD 2006 since the Helix command was not available it
was a little tough to draw a spring. Though the helix command is introduced in AutoCAD
2007 , it will be interesting to see how a spring can be drawn in earlier versions.
I assume that while drawing the spring the students have a knowledge of 2D/3D
AutoCAD. However the clear steps will be given. We start with a default area of 12x9 .

1] Click on rectangle tool and draw a rectangle of 5x5 size.

Command: _rectang
Specify first corner point or [Chamfer/Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width]:
Specify other corner point or [Dimensions]: @5,5

2] Extrude the rectangle to height of 5. This cube will be used for reference.
Type extrude at command prompt.

Command: extrude
Current wire frame density:  ISOLINES=4
Select objects: 1 found
Select objects:
Specify height of extrusion or [Path]: 5

3] Click on the ARC tool.

Command: _arc Specify start point of arc or [Center]: >>
Resuming ARC command.
Specify start point of arc or [Center]:
Specify second point of arc or [Center/End]:
Specify end point of arc:

Similarly draw on more arc as shown in the figure of step 4
4] Type ucs at command prompt to change the ucs(user coordinate system)

Command: ucs
Current ucs name:  *TOP*
Enter an option [New/Move/orthoGraphic/Prev/Restore/Save/Del/Apply/?/World]
<World>: 3p
Specify new origin point <0,0,0>:

5] Click on rotate tool and rotate one arc.

Command: _rotate
Current positive angle in UCS: ANGDIR=counterclockwise  ANGBASE=0
Select objects: 1 found
Select objects:
Specify base point:
Specify rotation angle or [Reference]:

6] Draw a small circle at the end of one arc and extrude this circle along the arc.
Command: extrude
Current wire frame density:  ISOLINES=4
Select objects: 1 found
Select objects:
Specify height of extrusion or [Path]: path
Select extrusion path:

7] Union the two links using union command. Copy the links one above other

Command: union
Select objects: Specify opposite corner: 0 found
Select objects: 1 found
Select objects: 1 found, 2 total
