ACUTE VIRAL HEPATITIS (AVH)

Findings
There were 39 Acute Viral Hepatitis (AVH) cases reported to the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) from January 1 to August 31, 2012. This has increased by 86% compared to cases of same period last year. The ages of affected individuals ranges from 6 to 76 years old (median= 29 y.o.). Age group 21-30 years old (28%) were mostly affected, followed by 41-50 years old (18%) of the total case. Males were slightly more affected with 23 cases composing the 59% of the total case. (See Table 1) Among the 10 municipalities and 1 city, Koronadal City has an apparent increase of reported AVH cases from 0 case as of end of August last year to 14 AVH cases composing the 36% total provincial case. It is followed by Polomolok (26%) with 10 cases. Number of AVH Cases in Lake Sebu has decreased from 5 cases to 4 this year though it ranks third in municipalities with highest number of case. No Cases were reported from Banga and Sto. Nio. See Figure 2.0 Seventy four percent (74%) were confirmed AVH cases (29 cases. Hepatitis B is the leading type composing the 83% of confirmed case. Five cases of Hepa A were also identified. Laboratory tests were not done to the remaining 26% suspected cases. Figure 3.0 shows monthly trend of AVH cases in the province from January 1 to August 31. As illustrated, the alert threshold line has been reached on all months except on the month of May. Epidemic threshold line were crossed on months of June and August. No death was reported associated or caused by AVH.
