Op Net Tutorial Part 2

This document provides an overview of using an example lab in OPNET IT Guru to illustrate application performance and capacity planning. The lab simulates a home network with a WAN link to an ISP. It shows how to change the WAN link speed from 20 kbps dial-up to 20 Mbps, run an 8-hour simulation of network traffic, and view statistics on web application response time and WAN link utilization to analyze the performance impact of different link speeds.

Introduction to OPNET IT Guru Tutorial Part 2 Transcript

Now that you have a basic understanding of how OPNET works, you will be able to see it in action in an example Lab. This example lab illustrates how you can use the steps described in the OPNET IT Guru Overview tutorial in a real-world situation. This example lab looks at application performance and capacity planning, by changing the link speed between a home LAN and its ISP. Start IT Guru. Select File and then Open and make sure Project is selected from the pull-down menu at the top. Scroll down to the project named Home_LAN, select it and click OK. Here we can see the simulated network of a pre-configured project. The WAN link will be configured as a 20 kbps dial-up line. Right-click on the WAN link, select Edit Attributes. Here we can see the different link attributes. We will be changing the data rate attribute of this link. Click in the Value field of the data rate attribute and select Edit Enter 20,000; press Enter and then click OK. To simulate this network, we will use high fidelity discrete event simulation. The model simulates client/server application packets, which represent real world network traffic. Click on the configure/run simulation button. Make sure the Simulation Duration is set to 8 hours to represent a typical day. Click Run and monitor the progress bar as the simulation proceeds. When the simulation completes, Click Close. We can now view various statistics including the web application Response Time and WAN link utilization. Now lets view and analyze the performance for the WAN link. Right-click on the WAN link and select View Results to view the utilization results for this link. Expand point-to-point and select utilization in both directions. Select

Overlaid Statistics from the pull-down menu on the bottom right- hand corner to place the results in the same panel. Select Show and then click Close in the View Results window. By changing the link speed between a home LAN and its ISP, we can see how the application performance is affected. We can conclude that traffic is associated with each application, so there is a significant difference between light Web browsing and heavy Web browsing.
