Runners just do it. They run for the finish line even if someone else has reached it first - Unknown

Dwarsrivier keeping the pace with community involvement

At the Eastern Limb Mines & Executive Mayors Marathon 2012
The marathon is a charismatic event. It has everything. It has drama. It has competition. It has camaraderie. It has heroism. Every jogger cant dream of being an Olympic champion, but he can dream of finishing a marathon. Fred Lebow, New York city Marathon cofounder. On Saturday 8 September 2012 Dwarsrivier Mine was part of the Eastern Limb Mines & Executive Mayors Marathon. This event takes place annually and has grown tremendously with athletes travelling from as far as Durban to come and run. It comprises a 5km fun run, 10km race and 21.1km race. The Dwarsrivier Mine team manned a waterpoint 12km from the finish of the 21.1km race. The team was ready with water, energy drinks and bananas for the athletes. For those with sore legs members of the mines proto team was on hand to rub the muscles back into running shape. At the finish line athletes were welcomed with a large Dwarsrivier Mine banner. The team enjoyed the day and becoming involved in such a popular community activity. Caring is one of the Mines important values. They not only care about keeping their employees fit, healthy and happy, but also the community in which they operate in its residents. The team is already looking forward to next years event!

The Dwarsrivier team with Executive Mayor Mogobe David Magabe and Fetakgomo Mayor Cllr. RE Sefala.

Platinum up
Platinum rose to its highest level in five months on after South African police said striking miners had blockaded roads leading to shafts belonging to number one producer Anglo American Platinum. The platinum price rose to $1649 yesterday just before going to print , while Anglo American Platinum announced the suspension of Rustenburg operations to protect the safety of its employees from outside intimidation. Explaining the decision, Chris Griffith, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, said Our employees are not on strike. However, in light of the current volatile situation in the Rustenburg area, where our employees, who want to go to work, are being prevented from doing so and are being intimidated by the threat of violence, Anglo American Platinum has decided to suspend its operations in the Rustenburg area with immediate effect. The suspension will continue until such time as operations can be safely resumed. Cynthia Carroll, Chairman of Anglo American Platinum, said: We have taken this decision to suspend our operations in order to help ensure the safety of our employees our absolute priority. Our people want to work and it is unacceptable that they are not able to go to work safely and instead are facing considerable intimidation. We are in touch with the authorities at the highest level to identify how we can work together with our tripartite partners - government and the recognised labour unions - to achieve a swift and peaceful resolution to these illegal actions. Our objective is to safely return to production as soon as possible. Our Rustenburg operations are already under considerable economic pressure and the longer it is necessary to continue this suspension, the greater the risk to their longterm viability. The platinum price has risen by nearly 20% since a strike at number three producer Lonmin turned violent last month, leaving 44 dead and dozens injured in clashes between police and striking workers. Yet a forecast surplus of metal stemming from faltering demand from the European car industry could limit further price gains, analysts said. The situation is delicate, very politically sensitive. But we have to sit back and take a more neutral look at the market and say this is all sentiment driven. Its debatable as to how much of a sustained rise this will be once the dust has settled, Societe Generale analyst Robin Bhar said. The market is facing quite a large surplus, anywhere upwards of 12 to 15 months worth of supply. You could shut the mines for a year and only then would the market come back to balance. Clearly, this is a sentiment-driven rally where people believe there is upside price risk, he said. South Africa produces about 80% of the worlds platinum. The strike at Lonmin have removed close to 60 000 oz of supply from the market in a month.

Set to open

The Burgersfort Mall is a have of activity these days as tenants ready their new shops for the grand opening at the end of this month. Inside the mall frantic activity can be observed as shopfitters work in the new shops, while some shops have even started packing out stock. Everybody seemed very positive about the new shopping mall, except one tenant who raised a concern about the available parking space and the traffic situation around the mall on opening day. The top photograph is of the main entrance not seen from the main road, while the bottom photograph pictures the main road side of the new mall from the pedestrian bridge over the main road (yes, the bridge nobody use).

Aapiesdoorndraai land claim dismissed

Blue Horison Investments 10 (Pty) Ltd, (BHI 10), a subsidiary of Cranbrook Limited , recently won a land claim dispute in Burgersfort. A land claim initiated on Burgersfort Extension 35, Portion 24 and the Remaining Extent of the farm Aapiesdoorndraai No 298 KT, was dismissed by the Land Claims Court of South Africa on 30 August 2012. This land claim was re-instituted by the Manok Family Trust represented by Tumi Moleke on 19 September 2008 after it had been rejected initially by the Regional Land Claims Commissioner of Mpumalanga on 14 June 2000. The Cranbrook subsidiary, BHI10, purchased a portion of portion 24 of the farm Aapiesdoorndraai No 298 KT from Anglo Operations Limited and established Burgersfort Extension 35 on the land. Motaganeng Light Industrial / Business Park, one of three Cranbrook developments in the Burgersfort area, were established on this extension. Dirk Conradie, CEO of Cranbrook Limited, says that in order to protect its interest in the properties, Blue Horison was compelled to apply to the Land Claims Court to set aside this second attempt by the Manok Family Trust to reclaim the farm. The court found that the Manok Family Trust and the Manok Community Trust could not have been dispossessed from those portions of Aapiesdoorndraai since they were never the owners of the land. The Commissioner therefore acted wrongfully to again entertain the land claim, resulting in the successful application by Blue Horison to set aside his decision and to pay the legal costs. There must be great empathy with people who were dispossessed from their property for political gain. However, property owners who acquired land legally must also be protected from irresponsible and baseless claims by opportunists, who are merely interested in benefiting from the development initiatives of property owners. This decision by the Court gives assurance to the public that the legal system in our country remains objective and independent, Conradie concluded.

Cranbrook speaks about Spekboom

Mr Dirk Conradie, Cranbrook Limiteds Chief Executive Officer says developments at the Spekboom River Estate continue, although the decline in the economy has had an adverse effect on certain aspects. Reacting to questions from readers, Mr Conradie says it is heartening to see people taking an interest in the developments around Burgersfort. He stated that 65 houses have already been built on the estate and that about 100 will be completed by the end of the year. The development of a school is still in the offing and contruction of the first phase is expected through 2013. The shopping centre, initially planned te be a mall in the region of 30 000 square metres, will now be a much smaller shopping centre of about ten thousand square metres. Planning will be adapted so that the centre can be expanded in phases to eventually reach the targeted initial size af about 30 thousand square metres. Mr Conradie concluded that it is planned to target the higher income groups in this shopping centre.

Paying tribute to Gappy

Last week Thursday was the last practise for the Winterveld Rugby Club for the season prior to their final against Noordelikes in Polokwane. After practise, the team got together at the Winterveld Recreation club for a meal and a short overview of the past season. It was an emotional gathering for the club where they paid their last tribute to their late team mate, Cornel (Gappy) Smit who passed away in a vehicle accident earlier this year. The club handed Cornels parents, Carools and Anita Smit, their sons rugby jersey that he played in. Renier Erasmus, the under captain, did the honours. The teams captain Quartus du Toit was not present due to family commitments. Another jersey was handed to the Winterveld Club Management to be displayed in the sportsbar until the Buffels have their own Club house. This jersey was handed over by Jannie (Noolie) Oosthuizen, the Buffels longest registered team member. The final against Noordelikes was his 120th game for the Winterveld rugby club. The clubs achievement was dedicated to Gappy and although he is no longer with them, he will always be in the teams memories. I would like to thank Tyre Coporation for sponsoring the jersey frames, for Eastern Chrome Mine (Samancor) for the meal, the Recreation club for the preparation and dishing of the meal and to all the supporters that joined that evening. We appreciate each contribution said Charl van der Merwe from the Winterveld Rugby Club.

Jannie Oosthuizen handed the Winterveld Club jersey to Corli de Bruyn.

Me. Anita Smit, Mr Johan Smit and Mr Carools Smit received their son and brothers jersey from Renier Erasmus. The Winterveld Buffels donated Gappys jersey in loving memory to the family.

Peace like a flowing river

Isaiah 66:12
For this is what the LORD says: "I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. (New International Version 1984)

Jesaja 66:12

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!Let the earth and all living things join in. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee!Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord. For the Lord is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness.

Heavy rain during last week brought relief for both nature and man. Between 100mm and 140mm was measured in the Watervalsrivier area. The photographs on this page was taken of the Spekboomriver and Tubatse (Steelpoort) rivers after the rain.

Buffels, a team to be reckoned with

Saturday, the 8th of September, the Winterveld Buffels faced the Noordelikes from Polokwane in Polokwane for their final in their Senior Boet Fick Super League. The Buffels unfortunately lost. The end score was 38-7. It was a very physical game, characterised by technical game plans. This made the defence very unpredictable but never the less provided good old fashioned, clean club rugby of a very high standard. By the end of the first half, the Buffels trailed by 33-0. After a few replacements and a change in our game plan, it became a completely different ball game, but too late for the Buffels unfortunately said Charl van der Merwe from the Buffels. In the second half the Buffels obtained 7 points against the Noordelikes 5 points. Congratulations Noordelikes, well played! I would like to congratulate the team on their achievement, we are all very proud of them. I would like to thank Quartus du Toit, the team captain, for his commitment and contribution to the teams success. He led by example and always managed to get the best out of his team. He was assisted by Renier Erasmus who proved to be a leader and player to be reckoned with. Thanks to Banna from the Loskop club and Karel Beetge from the Ohrigstad club for their interest and support in our clubs final. To the players from Eerstegeluk, well done boys!! You did us proud! Charl added. I am looking forward to our next season and know that we will end it on an even higher note. I would like to thank Oom Carools Smit for his contribution towards the beverages after the game, Samancor for the T-shirts, National Guarding services for the bus rental, Pick and Pay Steelpoort for the lunch packs, Mopane Caf for the Poweraide, Stone Age roadhouse in Polokwane for the supper and then to Noordelikes rugby club for their hospitality. This was a long and hard season and the Winterveld Rugby clubs Management would like to thank all the sponsors once again. Without your support, we wont be able to play rugby and thank you for your interest in our clubs well-being. I believe we made you proud to be associated with us. Till next season, Rugby greetings. For the Love of the Game!!
