Basic Micromouse Circuit
Basic Micromouse Circuit
This simple circuit will provide control for a wheelchair-type edge follower. Motor M1 runs when LDR1 is over a reflective surface (the white tape), motor M2 runs when LDR2 is over a non-reflective surface (the matt black surface of the competition mat). The switching levels for each motor control are determined by the values of R1 and R2 and how the LDRs are positioned.

any light dependent resistor, e.g. ORP12 1N4001 or 1N4184 values depend on LDR, try 10k BD679, BCX38B or any high gain transistor capable of handling around 1A
The resistors marked Rb are 1k. They are not really necessary in this circuit but are included in the pcb layout which follows to protect the transistors against excessive base currents in the event of shorts from base to the positive supply rail. If the fixed resistors are replaced by variables it is, again, advisable to include base protection. Take care with diode polarity and transistor lead identification. A copper stripboard plan is shown on the next page, but this circuit could be used as a printed circuit board planning exercise. I use Proteus Lite from Labcenter or PCB Wizard.
