Math Lab 1

The document provides instructions for a math lab assignment where students are asked to: 1) Complete a table with function values for f(x)=x+2 and g(x)=1-x over the interval -3 to 3. 2) Graph the functions f(x) and g(x). 3) Multiply the function values and add a column to the table for f(x)g(x). 4) Graph the points for f(x)g(x) and connect them to form a shape.

Precalculus Ms Oehrlein

Name ______________________________ Math Lab #1

Given:

f (x) = x + 2

g(x) = 1 x

1. Complete the table for the values of f (x) and g(x) .

x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

f (x) = x + 2

g(x) = 1 x

2. Sketch the graphs of f (x) and g(x) . 3. Add a heading to the third column in the table: f (x)ig(x) . Fill this column in by multiplying the values in the f (x) column by those in the g(x) column. 4. Add ( x, f (x)ig(x) ) to the graph. Connect the points. What shape did you make? __________________________ 5. What do you notice about the x-intercepts of the lines? ___________________ _________________________ 6. Determine the equation for your new shape by multiplying the equation for f (x) times the equation for g(x) .

7. Do you think this would work for any two equations of lines? Why or why not?
