According to Dawley (2007), effective online courses involve feedback, interaction, and content, and promote self-learning as well as an understanding of learning styles (p. 5). With online education, students can communicate, collaborate, and demonstrate mastery through a variety of online technology tools. The instructor is actively participating in discussion and feedback. Learning is primarily constructivist in nature as learners construct their knowledge through their own learning styles. Some online courses meet at specific times while others allow students to work at their own pace and submit work at various deadlines. What is andragogy and how does andragogy relate to online teaching and learning? According to Taylor and Kroth (2009), Andragogy is the theory of adult learning that sets out the scientific fundamentals of the activities of learners and teachers in planning, realizing, evaluating, and correcting adult learning (p. 3). This type of learning focuses more on the learner and not on the teaching and/or instruction. The instruction is geared more for selfmotivated learners who can construct meaning and learning on their own without a lot of assistance from an instructor. I think this directly applies to online teaching and learning. The focus of online instruction should be student/learner centered activities and construction of knowledge by individuals.
