This document provides instructions for Visual Tech exercise 1, which is due on September 4. Students are asked to animate a text, such as a poem, in After Effects using the Futura typeface. They should experiment with animating the position, scale, color, shape, and transparency of words and individual letters over time in a 15-30 second video. The animation should not distort the letters and must be saved in a zip folder labeled with the student's last name and shared with the instructor by the deadline.

Dynamic Typography: Changes Over Time
Time and motion change how a still image or text are perceived and how and audience interacts with it. Utilze time and motion in this exercise to animate a text and bring something new to it. Directions Animate the words of a poem. Think of ways to create flow and how you control the cadence of your animation. What do the new elements of time and motion bring to this text? Use the typeface Futura (and all its subsequent family members) and animate using After Effects. Use a variety of techniques for animating your type (think, 2D design principles but moving). Start by changing the position of the word or individual letters on the screen over time. Experiment with modes of change, including shifting the words scale, color, shape, and transparency. Vary the speed and degree of change to create different kinds of behavior. Create variations that use multiple forms of change simultaneously. Animate the word and the letters, but do not alter the form of the letter, and do not distort them by stretching or by using effects. Your animation should be 15-30 seconds long Name & save files in a folder called lastname-ex1. aep. Name & save After Effects file(s) like this: lastname-ex1. aep. Upload zipped folder to Dropbox.com and share folder with me. Your folder must be labeled with your last name so I can give you a grade. Use the NTSC DV composition settings in After Effects as the basic size for each of the video sequences. Final video sequences will be collected as a single Quicktime movie file. Use the 16:9 aspect ratio. Horizontal compositions 1440 810 or vertical comps 720 405. Deadline Exercise 1 is due Tuesday September 4, by the beginning of class.
