Lossless compression algorithms reduce file size without losing image quality, though they provide less compression than lossy algorithms. Lossy compression discards invisible information and allows variable quality levels, with higher compression resulting in more noticeable image deterioration. GIF was developed in 1987 by CompuServe and supports transparency, animation, progressive rendering, and lossless compression using LZW, making it best for icons and drawings, though it only supports 256 colors and is not suitable for high quality photos.

Lossless compression algorithms reduce file size without losing image quality, though they are not compressed

into as small a file as a lossy compression file. When image quality is valued above file size, lossless algorithms are typically chosen. Lossy compression algorithms take advantage of the inherent limitations of the human eye and discard invisible information. Most lossy compression algorithms allow for variable quality levels (compression) and as these levels are increased, file size is reduced. At the highest compression levels, image deterioration becomes noticeable as "compression artifacting".

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) developed

Features / Advantages of GIF

by CompuServe in 1987.

1. Supports Transparency : Transparency sets an images background color to the browser background color, thereby making the image appear as if it has no background. 2. GIF support Animation: specialized programs can combine several GIF images into a single file, which then displays each image in turn. The effect is like cartoon flip books. 3. GIF supports progressive rendering or interlacing: Non interlacing image is shown line by line & complete image is not visible until it has been completely loaded. Whereas interlaced image is shown in passes, filling in every 8th line until the entire image is displayed. Therefore interlaced image begin to appear on the screen faster. 4. Lossless compression : In this , image are compressed without losing image details. Because of this GIF are best for line art, drawing and icons. IT uses LZW lossless algorithm for compression. Disadvantage of GIF 1.It supports only 256 colors. 2. Cannot be used for high quality photograph.
