Presented By, Bhavana Shekar B.E.,M.Tech

This document provides an overview of basic signal processing operations in digital communication. It describes the key components including an information source, source encoder/decoder, channel encoder/decoder, modulator/demodulator, and the communication channel. The information source generates messages that are encoded by the source encoder. The channel encoder adds redundancy to increase reliability before modulation and transmission over the noisy communication channel. At the destination, demodulation and decoding recover the original information.

Information Source : It generates message

signal to be transmitted.

a) Source alphabet : letters ,digits , special characters etc., b) Symbol rate : rate at which source generates source
alphabets (symbol/sec).

c) Source alphabet probabilities : each symbol from

source has independent occurrence rate in sequence.

d) Probabilistic dependence of symbols in a

sequence : information carrying capacity of each symbol

is different in a particular sequence. Information rate = symbol rate x source entropy (bits/sec) (symbol/sec) (bits/symbol)

Source Encoder / Decoder:

ENCODER: Converts source symbol into discrete form. It assigns codeword to symbol. Every binary 1s and 0s are called bit. Group of bits is called codeword. a) Block Size b)Codeword Length c)Average data rate d)Efficiency of the encoder

Channel Encoder & Decoder :

Increases reliability of the signal.
Channel coding(even parity):

DIGITAL MODULATOR & DEMODULATOR:

MODULATORS : Always uses continuous sinusoidal carrier signal of high frequency to modulate the original signal. It maps input binary sequence into analog waveforms.

Communication Channel
a)Additive noise interference b)Signal Attenuation c)Amplitude & Phase distortion d)Multipath distortion

Resources:
a)Channel Bandwidth b)Power in the transmitted signal
