Prob13 Treasure

The document provides a math word problem about two pirates who need to transport themselves and 4 treasure chests across trips in a small dinghy from an island to their ship. It asks the student to show their work and reasoning to determine the number of one-way trips needed, and then extends the problem to additional chests. The student is prompted to make a general rule for determining the number of trips needed for any given number of pirates and chests.

explain each step in your method. Refer to your rubric for all parts needed to
achieve the maximum score. Be sure to follow the steps of problem solving we used
in the classroom:

Step 1: Read the Problem

Step 2: What is the problem asking me to solve?
Step 3: Is there any information I do not understand? Find out what it means.
Step 4: List all the information that is given to you.
Step 5: Select a strategy to solve this problem.
Step 6: Show all your steps to achieve a solution. Include a concluding statement.

Problem #13:

Two pirates stand on the shore of an island with the 4 treasure chests they have just dug up. They
have a small dinghy to carry them and their treasure back to their ship anchored off shore. The
dinghy can hold 1 pirate or 2 pirates or 1 pirate and 1 chest.

1. How many one-way trips will it take to get both pirates and all the treasure back to the
ship?
2. How many one-way trips would it take to get both pirates and 8 treasure chests back to
the ship?

Explain how you solved the problem.

3. Make a rule you could use to figure out how many trips it would take to carry 2 pirates and
any number of chests back to the ship. Use your rule to determine out how many trips it would
take to carry 2 pirates and 93 chests. Explain your thinking.
