The Ultimate PC

The document maps out how the components of a PC work together. It describes the basic functions of the hard drive, speakers, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and CPU. The hard drive receives signals to write or read files. Speakers play sounds received from the computer. The keyboard sends electrical signals when keys are pressed. Mouse movement is sensed by rollers and transmitted. The monitor displays signals translated on the video card. The CPU fetches data and code from RAM.

The Ultimate PC
Whether a PC is five years old or chock-full of the latest parts, it works in pretty much the same way. Newer, more advanced components just do it faster, easier, or sharper. Here we map out how these components work in all PCs so you can understand the difference between the ultimate system and a run-of-the-mill one.

Hard Drive
The circuit board on the hard drive receives signals from the PC that tell it to write a new file or to read an old one.

Speakers

Keyboard
Each time a key is pressed, an electrical signal goes to a microprocessor located within the keyboard.

Mouse

When your speaker, receive a sound from your computer, a crossover circuit examines each section of the electrical signals.

Monitor

Digital signals are translated on the video card into analog signals that send different amounts of electrical current to the monitor

CPU

The processors bus interface unit fetches the data and code from RAM

When you move your mouse, a rubber ball sticking through its button moves with it. The movements of the ball are passed on to two rollers. One roller senses the amount of up down movement and the other senses sideways movement .
