Ciao Bella
Guitar Lesson and Tabs
Introduction Greetings! I hope that you enjoy playing this song, Ciao Bella. A good friend of mine had the little doggie - Bella - shown on page one, and it saddened me so to say goodbye to her. I knew Bella would be ok, and run around, thrive and be happy in her new home outside New York City. So this is a tender, but happy musical goodbye to her, wishing her well. If youd like to watch the video of this song - you can hear the music, and also see my bouncing bald head here: Here is the original...kind of tender! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzOAPtGRcUs Heres how it sounds now LIVE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA7EjwCdFDM
To Play This Well - You Need to See the Voice Leading There are a lot of cool musical techniques in here, but this lesson will be limited to "voice leading" and something called "the suspension". By the way this same voice leading technique is what makes the new solo arrangements of "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder sound so good on guitar. In the new Vol II Stevie Wonder Fingerstyle DVD I walk you through all the voice leading and rhythmic concepts, techniques and so on. Youll see a lot of similarities between Ciao Bella and Isnt She Lovely once you look inside the music! (FYI - Both of my How to Play Stevie Wonder for Fingerstyle Guitar Instructional DVDs are available at http://adamrafferty.com - see the back pages of this PDF for details)
THE INSPIRATION FOR "CIAO BELLA" Was in fact Voice Leading itself! One night setting up for a gig, I found a "voice led" progression that sounded musical and felt inspired. Example 1:
That's right - Just 2 chords. Moving an E chord to an F# chord according to the rules of proper voice leering is actually not so easy - in terms of classical rules. Next, I found I could do a very pretty "suspension" by letting the open B string ring. Instead of playing the chords as in Example A, I could delay the motion in the middle voice, and let it catch up after the other chord tones were already ringing. Example 2:
Let the open B string ring, while you play the F#s on the Low & High E
Basically if this were 3 singers, the middle one would hold the note from the rst chord while the others switch, and switch "after" the chord arrived.
This is a true meaning of what it called a "suspension." A Suspension has to be "prepared properly" - meaning it belongs to the rst harmony. It then becomes a dissonance to the new chord, and is resolved downward becomes a note belonging to the harmony to the new chord. WHEW! Too much talk - just play it a few times & youll see (and hear) what I mean. Two more chords naturally followed after playing this, a B7 and E chord. The whole thing WITHOUT "suspensions" looks like this - a 3 voice choir. Ex. 3:
(Psst - this is a LOT like the voice leading from "Isn't She Lovely" - it's even in the same key!)
If we do the "suspensions" throughout the middle voice (lets put a second one between the 3rd & 4th chord) we get this: Ex. 4:
Performance Note In the actual tune, I play the B string OPEN before the rst the chord hits - just to teach the listeners ear that there is a "middle voice" and establish the separation of the voices so they sound less like "chords." As well, I play the melody with some bluesy slides and accents, and I groove the bass a little bit. Take a look and listen below to these versions once again: Here is the original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzOAPtGRcUs Heres how it sounds now LIVE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA7EjwCdFDM
If the Tabs Look Complicated, Scary and Insane To You - Dont Worry! Written music always looks more complex than it actually is. 1. PLAY the Examples 1-4 several times. Its easier to see the musical idea without the rhythms written out. Youll see - its actually a VERY SIMPLE IDEA. 2. Always ask whats the top, middle and bottom doing in the music. If You Find an Error in the Music... Please let me know! It is very easy to make a mistake when writing tabs, and I apologize if there are any. If you have ever written tabs out yourself, you know it is a LONG process. If you have never written out tabs - this piece takes me 5 minutes to play - but it took 3-4 days to produce the music you now have in your hands. Let me know about any typos you see and I will send you a FREE bonus as my way to say thank you!
About the Notation Left Hand 1 - left hand index nger 2 - middle 3 - ring 4 - pinky T - thumb over top of neck Please refer to recording to hear bends & slides! Right Hand BS - Back Strike Strum, etc written out! Listen First, then Practice.... I hope you enjoy Ciao Bella and I cant wait to hear your version of it! Get the song into your ears and THEN try to play it. Mess around with the voice leading examlpes FIRST! I wish you (and your listeners) many happy hours, days and years full of music! Lots of Love,
P.S. You may share this PDF le as long as you keep everything intact the way it is! Enjoy!

And whats more this easy to follow, step by step approach is so simple that even a child could do it!
Dear Adam, With the time I spent working on Excercise one, it has already paid off. I have been going through the Hanon exercises and working on just playing at fast tempos. I am seeing some excellent progress in my playing. Last Saturday night I played a gig with my regular top 40 (oldies top 40) band and not only did I feel that I was more relaxed on the up tempos pieces but that my playing in general was more relaxed. Speed wasnt an issue that night. If I had been the only one to notice it would have been good but the whole band really commented. The Bass player, who is very critical, commented that it was like I was On Fire. I know that I will keep it up and it will really pay off. I work a 50 hour a week job and have a family so I get in a little over an hour a day on average practicing and this is now part of my routine. Frank Markovich (Guitarist) Belmont, CA

From the Laptop of Adam Rafferty Greetings Fellow Guitar Player! It gives me great pleasure and joy to teach you the guitar and musical concepts and secrets I have learned over the years. I have been very lucky to have the opportunity to study and play with some of the greatest musicians on the planet, from fingerstyle, to classical music to blues to jazz, and I look forward to passing as much on to you as I can. Two things that my great teachers taught me are that 1) there are no shortcuts, but 2) its easy when you get the right information! I made a pact with myself anytime Id feel the elation and delight of unraveling musical mysteries, that Id pass the knowledge on as best I can. This is the process of how music and learning evolve. Each generation builds on the information from the previous one and this continually raises the standard of excellence. I also made a pact that Id be a teacher (for you) that the proof would be in the pudding. I.E. - youd want to learn from me because you actually love the music you hear come out of my fingers! No matter what anyones level of talent is, we all need teachers and people who have seen things we havent, and basically been around the block more than we ourselves have. Your excellence matters to me. Your level of joy and creativity matters to me. Your happiness matters to me! And I thank you for entrusting me to share my knowledge with you. I am here to coach you, teach you, kick your butt and show you how excellent you can be. Feel free to call or email me anytime for lessons, coaching, questions or just to say Hi! As well, if you have any questions about any of my online lessons or guitar educational products, call me. I am here to help YOU realize your true excellence on the guitar, in music and in life! With Warmest Regards,
Adam
