Frank Andrews OBITUARY
Frank Andrews has passed away of cancer at age 91. He was a well-known professor who cared deeply about education and students. His legacy lives in two generations of UCSC students. Frank was born in Manhattan, Kansas, in 1932. He graduated from Kansas State University in chemistry as valedictorian in 1954. Frank won a Fulbright fellowship and spent the following year studying higher mathematics in Hull, England. He attended Harvard graduate school in theoretical chemical physics studying under Ilya Prigogine, a Nobel laureate. He finished his PhD and spent a post-doctoral year under Dudley Herschbach, also a Nobel laureate. He taught for 5 years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While there, he married Jean Langford, also of Manhattan, KS. In 1967 Frank joined the faculty at UCSC. The new, experimental campus was a wonderful place for his creative mind. He taught chemistry classes; he created new classes; he read extensively about education. He served on many committees. The Andrews served as dorm parents for 5 years in Crown College. Through this experience Frank got to know the students well, and he was intrigued with how to help them believe in themselves and live successful, fulfilling lives. He kept his office door open to any student who came in. He listened to, comforted, tutored and advised them in his compassionate, earnest manner. Learning from Frank was life-changing for some of his students, and he won many teaching awards. Frank read constantly. He read hundreds of books on values, wisdom traditions, and positive psychology. He wrote 2 books: “The Art and Practice of Loving” (one reviewer said, “This is my favorite book of all time”), and “Choosing Your Way Through Life” (written with Ron Richardson of Scotts Valley). Frank taught at UCSC from 1967 to 2017, a 50-year legacy of reading and thinking and teaching. He thought hard about how to live. He practiced gratitude and peacefulness and tried to put good energy into the world. Even near the end of his life, he never complained but was still practicing love and gratitude. He is survived by his wife Jean of 59 years, and by daughters Karen Andrews, of Capitola, and Elizabeth Andrews and son-in-law Chris Lay, of Santa Cruz, and by grandkids Laurel Andrews (20) and Brooke Andrews (17).Some of Frank’s writings are at: frankandrews.weebly.com.
