Critics Consensus

Practical Magic's jarring tonal shifts sink what little potential its offbeat story may have -- though Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock's chemistry makes a strong argument for future collaborations.

Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Filming in a golden-syrupy light, Dunne seems to have little ambition beyond making his stars look adorable (not tricky) and hoping we'll have forgotten most of The Witches of Eastwick. Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News It doesn't seem as if there was much communication between the three screenwriters who are credited with adapting Alice Hoffman's novel. Perhaps they should have tried ESP. Rated: 1/4 Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Practical Magic, in other words, is anything but magical. Astrid S All the “bad” the critics are talking about is the humor they don’t get. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Eric S Terrible, bad, jumps from scene to scene, all over the place and the acting is terrible. Nicole Kidman was not good. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Susan S This is one of my all time favourite films. Love it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/24 Full Review Ryan S Cult Classic. One of the best Witch type movies and i cannot wait for the Sequel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Christopher B Look, I do genuinely believe that rotten tomatoes profession critics ratings can be quite insightful, and sure it's a soapy movie and bla bla, but it is PEAK 90s nostalgia. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock SLAY. I'm not gonna sit here and analyze everything wrong with it; it's cute af. I guess my one criticism is that it sort of positions Kdman's character and her lack of settling down as a bit of a negative versus Bullock's leaning into a normal family lifestyle. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Jerod S Practical Magic bounces between being a sappy love story to abuse story to ladies in striped socks jumping off roofs with umbrellas. It's got that 90s vibe and Bullock and Kidman - but not a lot more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
