Critics Consensus

There's no denying that mother! is the thought-provoking product of a singularly ambitious artistic vision, though it may be too unwieldy for mainstream tastes.

Dahlia Balcazar Bitch Media Mother! is what happens when a dude has an idea he thinks is brilliant and no one checks him on it. Mar 1, 2021 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine [Darren] Aronofsky wants mother! to have the intensity and inner logic of a sweaty nightmare. But it's a fake cinematic fever dream-the kind made by a director so self-conscious that he's always checking his own temperature. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) Ultimately, you may be left pondering not so much the allegory as to why [Darren] Aronofsky would want to push not just his audience but his girlfriend through such an extreme wringer. Rated: 5/5 Oct 11, 2017 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Aronofsky "recycles" others' and, ironically, his own previous film ideas, resulting in Mother! appearing an unoriginal horror concoction, an uncomfortable reminder of other, much better films. Rated: 3/5 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Clayton Schuster Vague Visages If mother! lacks the refinement of a manifesto for a new breed of movie theater flick, it makes up for it in the audacity to be unique. Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Once movies leave their creators’ hands they often become their own thing. “mother!” benefits from that truth. While Aronofsky has a pointed personal meaning behind it, what you bring to the film will help define it for you. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Ian Y Not a horror film. And not a good film.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Karina P This movie was extremely OTT and felt pointless. I understand the entire movie is supposed to be a metaphor for nature, God, and man.. but it just felt chaotic and felt like a big waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Holly It’s a masterpiece… if people say otherwise it is because they can’t see the point of the movie! It is disturbing and beautiful just like Mother Earth Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Jakeem B The movie pisses me off and idk if that’s a good thing or a bad thing … it annoyed me how stupid and how much of a puppy Mother acted like.. but I understand that’s the whole point and she’s meant to be that way cause she’s meant to symbolize Mother Nature and how humanity just tramples over her and she takes it all .. but still the whole time I was just thinking “girl tell those people to get out your house!! And stop apologizing”… only way you’d truly like it is if you’re a religious whack job or some wanna be artsy loser. Thought provoking?? Yes.. lots of symbolism and deep meaning?? Yes… does that make it good?.. not even close Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review J W Pretentious? Most certainly. Also unforgettable: several years on, I still think about it. A beautifully imagined, allegorical nightmare with actors at the top of their game. Watching it once is not enough—it requires a second viewing—so much is happening on the edges. It is truly a spot-on depiction of what destruction humankind is capable in its stampede to dominate. There is a poignancy to the Biblical allegories that would have been lost with less talented people involved. It is brutal, but so is life. Beginning to end, it reminded me deeply of Dante’s Inferno, Foxes Book of Martyrs, and the creepy religious tracts about eternal damnation I used to read as a child in my Fundamentalist church. Not for the faint-hearted, it is a polarizing film and a work of art. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Camila L JAMAS ME HARAN ODIARTE MOTHER! Also tiene momentos suuuuuuupeer aburridos pero es muy difrutable Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
