Critics Consensus

Full of creepy campfire scares, mock-doc The Blair Witch Project keeps audiences in the dark about its titular villain, proving once more that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.

Joe Clay Times (UK) So convincing was this clever, chilling fake documentary that Donahue’s mother received sympathy cards from people who believed that her daughter was actually dead or missing. Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal The scariest shots, from someone's little Hi-8 camcorder, document the students losing their bearings, giving way to panic and finally falling victim, though off screen, to some ineffably, unphotographably evil presence. Dec 13, 2014 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com Whenever night falls, the movie takes off, but in a slow creep, with all your childhood fears of the dark suddenly revealing themselves as absolutely reasonable. Sep 29, 2014 Full Review John Brhel Vague Visages The Blair Witch Project isn’t a horror film experience on par with ‘The Exorcist’ or ‘The Shining,’ but that’s not a fair comparison. It’s an experience all its own. Jun 5, 2023 Full Review Christopher Borrelli Toledo Blade [The Blair Witch Project is] the most effective and unsettling horror movie in quite a long time. Just to clarify: after seeing this, you will not sleep well. Invest in a night-light. Rated: 4/4 Dec 15, 2022 Full Review Peter Terzian Out Magazine The intimacy of video and the believability of the three students close the gap between film and viewer, truly allowing us to suspend disbelief, something horror films seldom do. Aaron B yep.. still terrifying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Karl T I watch this film in the cinema when I was 16. Now 40 I re watched this. Ok kids these days might not get this but at the time this was revolutionary movie before a time of social media and found footage films. And the ending still gets me as one of the most tense and horrible moments in horror history. There something about that just gets me I think it might just be the not ever knowing absolute classic of the horror genre and a must watch for any horror fan Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Alex F A very good horror film. It isn't stupid with lots of effects and silly characters, it just contains pure suspense and fear. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review BradLee B The fact that people actually thought this was REAL at one point is actually AMAZING. That goes to show that anyone can make a good movie, no matter what they have to work with. This movie really creeped me out, especially towards the end, but overall it was unbelievable!! This movie was the definition of found footage horror, and it's definitely the most unique horror film I have ever seen!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Robert T Honestly just really boring. By today’s standards, not very scary. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review matthew d Just shit Boring as batshit Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
