Texas Roadhouse never disappoints

Prime rib on a Monday, this one tasted as good as it looks and was $24. I’ve never been disappointed there yet.

To the people saying this looks sad/like trash...have you never had prime rib before? It's supposed to look like that. Not a fan of the corn but the meat looks fine. Not the best you'll ever have but it's 24 dollars, what are you expecting?

Wife and I do well and eat at plenty of fancy places.

Texas Roadhouse has the best food at the price point.

u/Stumpfest2020 avatar

TRH somehow manages to remain one of the only mid tier restaurants where I feel like it's good enough and cheap enough to eat there without feeling like I'm wasting my money because I could make it better and cheaper at home.

u/CardMechanic avatar

Goddamn, I thought TRH was This Right Here as a response, lol…..

It’s Texas Road House

$24 for a good sized prime rib with a side at a restaurant is pretty cheap honestly, and the local nicer burger shop I go to sells fucking burgers and fries for $18. I'd feel much better about $24 for prime rib than an $18 burger.

Shit bro, five guys trying to sell a burger and fries for almost that much.

Worked there for years in the early 2000s. Almost everything is made from scratch.

How is the prime rib cooked at TRH? I didn't realize each location cooked it from scratch. Is it smoked, oven, sous vide? Thanks.

Edited

The one I worked at had an Alto-Shaam. So, done the right way. Seared in convection for a short amout of time(I think it was 350 for 15 mins? Can’t recall exactly), then transferred to the shaam with a dual temp hold. Was always perfect when I walked in in the morning.

This was also the method I used when I worked at a high end supper club.

Edit: added some context and fixed typo.

I’m happy to read this. This sub weaseled its way onto my feed, and Texas Roadhouse has been curing my steak itch that you all gave me. I’ve always found it to be pretty damned good considering the price and it being a chain restaurant. I’ll continue enjoying my 11oz sirloin with fries and Sam Adams

Their dinner rolls are the best. Steak is on point. Ribs are decent. Service is great. The only thing that annoys me really is the cowbell and happy birthday thing with all the wait staff. One time they did it five fucking times in the short time I was there.

More replies

Yes. 100%

Not only a solid value, but solid steak objectively. Reasonably competent home cooks can exceed the quality of a lot of steakhouses and almost all mid-level sit down restaurants. But Texas Roadhouse is hard to beat for the money and convenience. The wait however…

u/djclarkyk avatar

Just get ya girlfriend that worked at one for 8 years. Whenever we walk into that TRH she has all the staff coming up and saying hi, and then one of her old waitressing friends will put us in their section. I don't think I've waited past 10 minutes at that TRH since!

u/Escritortoise avatar

I work at an upscale steakhouse, and I’ll still fuck with Texas Roadhouse- 30 bucks for a steak and sides? I’m in

u/ReflectionEterna avatar

Some people are never going to accept your statement, despite it being the truth. They think nothing good comes below $50.

These are the same people who insist that "if the steak is good, you don't need to dip it in anything".

Like, fuck you. If someone wants to dip their perfectly cooked prime rib in ketchup, that's great. Food is meant to be enjoyed and not held up to some ridiculous standard.

I almost always ask for creamed horseradish with any steak; no matter the price point.

Us too.

$350 for dinner is just a Tuesday night for us, but I have to keep quiet when my cow worker goes on and on about how wonderful Logan's or Stony River is. Excellent steaks!

Dude, you have no idea.

If your cow worker is a steak lover, I may have some bad news for you...

That looks just fine for $24. 2 value meals at McDonald's and you over $24....that's a great feaking deal. Im going to go see if mine has the same deal

u/SaxAppeal avatar

McDonald’s isn’t cheap anymore. The only cheap fast food with bang for your buck is Wendy’s biggie bags (formerly 4 for 4), but they keep driving those up too so it will eventually just be another more expensive combo meal like all the rest

u/fopiecechicken avatar

If you’re on the west coast In n Out is still great value. I think a double double and fries is like $7 and it’s way better quality than most fast food places.

For $24, I’m in. It’s cooked perfectly. I’m used to either making it on my own (Hello Christmas!) or the House of prime rib in SF which is awesome, but pricy.

$24 is moose lodge prices = you really can’t beat it. Hopefully that horse is semi spicy.

The meat looks perfectly fine. It's the corn. Also, could've used a larger plate.

u/PalinDoesntSeeRussia avatar

What’s wrong with the corn???

They sound more credible if they bag on at least one thing

More replies

The corn isn’t even bad. The only thing that’s wrong is the side being jammed up on the plate. A prime rib should be alone on a large plate. Sides are up to you, but I’d have gone with a baked potato or maybe sautéed broccoli or asparagus, personally.

Worked there a couple years as a meat cutter. They make everything from scratch

u/Swimgod34 avatar

How do you not like that corn!

About to say, I live in a part of Boston where $20 burgers are pretty common. The closest Roadhouse to me charges $24 for a slab of prime rib

More replies

I’d pay 24 bucks for that. I’ve had a couple of flops there too tho

Same. The last two times I’ve gotten the prime rib it has been a letdown sadly. Otherwise it’s great!

Sorry. I’m not sure why it’s so freaking hard for restaurants to get prime rib right. 90% of the time I order it I’m disappointed and that includes ‘good’ restaurants like delfriscos.

u/Pyotrnator avatar

It's really not hard.

Step 1: sous vide for forever

Step 2: cover in a fatty/oily spread

Step 3: briefly blast with fire until fatty/oily spread is charred away.

So much better than cranking out individual steaks once you get to a half dozen or so

more replies More replies

Because you don’t go in the morning or early afternoon. Prime rib is kept in a heat controlled contraption, after being cooked, to keep it from going bad. Essentially cooking it through very slowly throughout the day. By 2pm prime rib can’t be anything less than medium well.

I’m right there with you, dude. Medium rare large-chain-restaurant-prime rib is my guilty pleasure. I’ve gone to Outback on my birthday for prime rib for the last 30 years. But CORN as your side??? I can’t support that.

Prime rib, baked potato, corn strikes me as a very “Nebraska” way to have this meal, having grown up in Omaha

It's poetic, in a way. You eat the cow with a side of what the cow ate.

Edit: I also have a personal record of rolls ate at 21 🤣

That is pretty close to fast food prices.

Honestly it's cheaper than most places..

Can easily rack up a $15+ bill at even Taco Bell or McD's these days. I don't know what happened to fast food because it's not just more expensive, the quality somehow got even shittier.

I’ve had steak dinner for two at Texas Roadhouse for roughly the same price as two burrito bowls from Moes. It’s definitely not the best steak on the planet but it’s a great competitor for sit down restaurants and QSRs.

Well, this looks like corn served at Tom Landry Elementary in Arlen, Texas.

That’s what everyone has against it

u/Jean-LucBacardi avatar

There's nothing wrong with basic corn like this on a Tuesday night when you're in a rush to make dinner at home, but just give it to me on the cob if you're going to go to such little effort to spice it up.

u/trivialempire avatar

Agreed. 100%. Corn on the cob = fine. Not spectacular, but it’ll work, especially if it’s slathered in butter.

Corn in this picture looks like someone wearing a hair net named Bertha dumped a quarter can of Best Choice corn into a small dish and sent it out.

As a born and raised, corn fed Ohioan… it doesn’t take long to fry the corn. In a pan with some butter and SnP. Makes a WORLD of difference. Especially when grabbing a bag of frozen corn as a quick side dish.

I’m with ya. Can I make a steak better at home? Yes. But I can go there with someone and have a decent restaurant experience while staying within my goal calories / macros. And it’s about $16 for what I get.

And honestly, I don't generally find:

Can I make [xyz] better at home?

to be that convincing as an argument. Can I make it better at home/from scratch? Sure (sometimes), but that also means I'm doing all the work. And no one's bringing me a fancy cocktail or refilling my wine glass.

got a prime rib at Texas Roadhouse last Friday. I was with my friends. when my food showed up, looking pretty much exactly like that, my friends looked at it like I had just been given a chunk of raw flesh to eat. they literally were worried for me because they didn't understand how prime rib is supposed to look. I tried to explain it to them but they kept making jokes about it still mooing.

It was delicious, but even the 12oz was too much steak for me lol. I barely finished it.

I. Fuckin. Love. Texas Roadhouse.

Maybe I need to hit up Texas roadhouse, and not just for the frozen Margs or sweet bread

Bruh this reads like a advertisment lol

[deleted]
[deleted]

Corn and a hunk of meat. Definitely not disappointing. 🤦‍♂️

For y'all ragging on the corn, it's a complex carbohydrate, good for restocking your glycogen stores without the glycemic index being too bad. For all I know the OP just wanted corn, but I look at this, and I see an ideal post-exercise recovery meal. Plain baked potato would be more nutritious, but corn is tastier than a plain potato and less calories than a loaded potato.

u/TylerDurdenEsq avatar

Excellent, a Reddit post that will literally change my behavior - I gotta try this place now

u/PaltryCharacter avatar

I use to go there for the porterhouse, but eventually I got tired of going there because they turn the music so loud

u/res0jyyt1 avatar

Texas Roadhouse is still my favorite go to. All other big chains are trash now. Even outback. Yes, I said it.

Totally agree, something is off at outback these days. My daughter wanted the bread from OB so we did there for her birthday and it was a terrible quality meal for the price we paid.

I saw some steak and lobster special advertised and asked for that but was told they were a franchise, "sorry we don't do that it's market price here".

Worst steak I ever had at an Outback and it was $34+ a plate for most of us in the party (no lobster, that would have been 45). The bread was honestly best part of the meal. Even the blooming onion was different and poorly cooked.

u/deadly_titanfart avatar

A few years ago Outback changed their quality of steak imo. Horrible steak but delicious cheese fries. Their prime rib is the only decent cut

Outback sucks.

YOURS DOES WEEKDAY PRIME RIB? Mine only does weekends 😪

God I ordered some filets there before and it was a nightmare. I ordered medium rare and they came out well done with 0 pink visible anywhere. They were also mangled like they let raccoons fight over them out back. I think they cut into them multiple times during cooking to check doneness. I'm glad your texas roadhouse is better but I will never order steak from mine again.

My only fault with texas roadhouse prime rib is the jus tastes like liquid smoke in a ramekin the last time I tried it

Ofc a steak sub will not have good things to say about a themed chain steak place but for the money the ones near me are a solid value. Im trying to cut back on fattier meat these days but even the ribeye which I don't trust most places to cook properly is great there.

I can get a huge sirloin for about what the local crappy diner wants for their frozen steaks these days. Plus that chili is also solid and I like their salad/ranch and the sides except the dry ass corn haha. Small things yes but a lot of places are cutting corners on those things but still increasing prices, I don't see that at TRH.

This could depend on the region, in CO but started eating there back in TX and have found it consistent between the two states.

My steaks off my own grill/cast iron/smoker will always beat eating out but sometimes I don't feel like doing all that.

More replies

I'm so jaded from ordering steaks at big chain "steakhouses" and being extremely disappointed that I just do chicken whenever we go out.

That doesn't look bad, but still not gonna risk it.

I have a TRH by my office. Pre Covid the early dine special was $9.99 for a 6oz sirloin and two sides. I’d get the house salad and either a loaded baked potato or broccoli.
Sirloin is usually tasty but tougher than other cuts. Theirs is like New York strip. So tender and delicious. Prices went up to $12.99 after Covid.
Also come with rolls and peanuts. Still the best deal around and cheaper than a McDonalds lunch. Best steak ever? No. $13? Yes please. All day long.

Seconding the petite sirloin at TRH 🙌🏻

More replies

Not a fan of the TR vibe but the food is good for the price.

The only way Texas Roadhouse prime rib disappoints is when they run out and when my local store began serving it only Friday through Sunday.

u/KocaKolaKlassic avatar

I’ve given prime rib a try at Texas Roadhouse a couple times. Very bland. Both the steak and au jus have almost no taste. I’ll stick to the ribeye cuz honestly, it’s in my top 3 for ribeye for such a value price. Texas Roadhouse ribeye is the reason I even started to like/crave steak. Decent baked potato here too. For prime ribs, I find the non franchise restaurants do it best for some reason.

"Not a fan of the corn but the meat looks fine. Not the best you'll ever have"

Yes, this is the real review for TR. It's not great, but it's cheap.

Just what I look for in my steak - cheap, not great.

I would be pissed if I paid for a steak and got plastic cups full of sauce. Give me dishes like I’m at an actual establishment and not a fast-casual counter service.

Real talk, is their prime rib worth it? I've always threatened to try it

Agreed, Texas Roadhouse always delivers a good steak, solid 8/10 every time, for very reasonable prices. And all the sides and everything else is good too. I don't know how they do it, but they blow everyone else in their space out of the water. I've had better steaks, but only at 4x the price, or more. And I've had plenty of more expensive steaks that weren't as good.

Awesome prime rib. Sad with the sides for $24u.s.. at least a salad, asparagus or potato of some sort. But I'm travelling back home to CT in 2 weeks and the 1st stop is a prime rib. They don't do them here is Australia and I'm dying for one

I was never a fan of the B tier steak houses but I gotta say I was impressed with the Texas Roadhouse by us. It's always packed, but the wait isn't bad, and the food is always hot and fresh. Every steak was cooked exactly as I asked it to be too.

Nothing beats the Ribeye imo

It's preposterous shitting on a place that serves consistent and fairly good steak meals under $30.

Is it prime or aged, no, but it's a chain restaurant for families.

I’m from a small rural town. We’d have to drive a 2 hour round trip to go to TRH. It was a weekend treat. It’s “fancy” for where I’m from. I’ve since moved to a much bigger city, with nice steakhouses. However I’ll never forget my love for this restaurant and their prime rib. (Also a huge fan of Rafferty’s as well. Their prime rib is awesome)

u/Brooklynboxer88 avatar

I have to give it another shot, I used to love it until I had one of the worst strip steaks I ever had. It had a tough nerve right down the middle.

Not sure if I'd consider prime rib to be steak, but damn that looks good.

u/anothernotavailable2 avatar

It is tough, cause obviously it is a roast that is then cut into slices to serve. If you cut it before cooking, then it's definitely a steak. Same with my tenderloin Christmas roast, it's a filet if I slice it before cooking, a roast if after.

Either way it scratches the same itch.

Prime rib doesn't have the crust you'd expect on a steak though. Steak to me is a precut thin(within reason) slice of meat that you sear on both sides. Roast is the picture.

I have had that and can attest to how good it is. Texas Roadhouse does a very good job.

It’s the most consistent steak nationwide. If you’re looking for a decent steak at all the chains. This one is it.

Longhorn is a 2nd for me on nationwide taste and consistency.

3rd is Outback. They are the most inconsistent across the nation. And price point is 5 to 10 dollars higher for a lower quality (most of the time not all the time) steak. I’ve had a few that are fire but it’s rare anymore.

I travel all the time all states for 20 years.

Exactly, that’s what I think also
