'My god': Observers appalled as White House presser hijacked by praise of Trump fitness

Friday's White House press briefing took a bizarre turn when Cara Castronuova, a right-wing former boxing champion, asked press secretary Karoline Leavitt about why President Donald Trump purportedly looks so attractive all of a sudden — spawning mockery and revulsion from commenters on social media.

"President Trump looks healthier than ever before," said Castronuova. "I'm sure everybody in this room could agree. Is he working out with Bobby Kennedy and is he eating less McDonald's?" To which Leavitt replied, "I can confirm the president is in very good shape."

The reaction from social media was swift, with even some right-leaning figures calling that a bit too much.

"My God. You used to complain about the media," wrote right-wing commentator Richard Hanania on X. "Look at the new rightoid media. Literally questions about how hot Trump looks. This kind of worship was funny and had an ironic flavor in 2016. Now it’s literally how we’re governed."

On Bluesky, the reaction was even more mocking.

"This is somehow more obsequious than 'Mr. Burns, your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?'" wrote Ben Collins, owner of the satirical publication The Onion.

"It’s just that the shape is 'round,'" wrote sportscaster Tyler Maun, accompanied by a picture of Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club, looking unflatteringly bloated and elderly.

"In related news, Kim Jong-un successfully drove a car at the age of three, and his father Kim Jong-il invented the hamburger," wrote Arc Digital editor and University of Illinois foreign relations professor Nicholas Grossman.
