The Society for Underutilized Legumes (SUL), IITA Genetic Resources Center, recently hosted a webinar as part of its Academic Lecture Series, focusing on the critical issue of balancing food security with environmental and health concerns in bean production. Professor Beckley Ikhajiagbe, a renowned expert in Ecophysiology and Biotechnology from the University of Benin, Nigeria, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the challenges of bean preservation in Nigeria. He highlighted the hazardous methods currently employed, including the use of toxic chemicals like "Sniper," which has been linked to poisoning and fatalities. Professor Ikhajiagbe emphasized the urgent need for sustainable and safe alternatives, discussing biocontrol methods and other eco-friendly approaches to bean preservation. The webinar also explored the role of policy and regulation in addressing these challenges.
In his welcome address, SUL National President, Dr Adegboyega Taofeek Tope, stressed that research studies have shown that contamination, product adulteration, low branding, and uncontrolled export and import controls are all concerns of bean preservation. He lamented poor consumer education, particularly among food handlers with less or inadequate training, negatively affecting the general population and health.
During the discussion, Professor Ikhajiagbe stressed that while existing policies address the use of chemicals in food preservation, enforcement remains a significant issue. He advocated for stronger government action and community engagement to educate farmers about the dangers of hazardous substances. The webinar concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the importance of safe food preservation practices and the need for effective policy enforcement.
