New rules for vehicles – this includes (class A) motor

Council would like to inform residents about the new rules regarding abandoned or unattended vehicles, which are now in effect under the NSW Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021. This legislation replaces the previous Impounding Act 1993.

Important Information:

  1. Registered Vehicles Parked Safely:
  • If a registered vehicle is left unattended in the same location for 28 days, or if it is left unattended and interfering with an amenity, the owner will receive a 15-day notice. If the vehicle is not removed after this period, the authority can take possession of it.
  1. Unregistered Vehicles Parked Safely:
  • If an unregistered vehicle is left unattended in the same location for 15 days, or if it is left unattended and interfering with an amenity, the owner will receive a 3-day notice. If the vehicle is not removed within this timeframe, the authority can take possession of it.
  1. Obstruction / Safety Risk:
  • If a vehicle is unattended and obstructing access or posing a safety risk, the authority can take possession of the vehicle immediately.
  1. After Taking Possession:
  • The authority may dispose of any vehicle valued under $1,500 without delay. If the vehicle is valued over $1,500, the owner has 28 days to reclaim it.
