(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Ohio is ready for its close-up. The Ohio Department of Development today announced a new application window for the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit Program, designed to attract world-class productions and grow the creative economy in the heart of it all.
With unmatched locations, local talent, and a 30 percent refundable tax credit on production cast and crew wages, plus other eligible in-state spending, Ohio offers producers a compelling reason to turn their next script into a reality in the Buckeye State.
"From vibrant cities and beautiful outdoor spaces to local talent and skilled crews, Ohio offers everything a production needs to succeed," said Governor Mike DeWine.
Applications for the current round are open now through 4 p.m. June 2, with awards to be announced by July 31. Eligible productions include feature-length films, documentaries, pre-Broadway productions, miniseries, video games, and music videos.
"Ohio's creative economy is thriving because we continue to invest in the people and places that bring great stories to life," said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development. "Productions are choosing Ohio not just for the financial incentives, but because we offer something special-a welcoming, resource-rich environment that helps creative visions succeed."
The Department of Development reviews applications and makes awards during two funding rounds each year. A total of $50 million in funding is available annually, plus any rollover amounts from the preceding period and any recaptured funds from previous productions, with $5 million being withheld annually from the full amount specifically for Broadway and theatrical productions.
Applications are reviewed based on several factors, including potential economic impact, and contributions to developing a permanent workforce in the industry. The program prioritizes television series and miniseries, followed by other eligible productions.
Since 2016, the tax credit has supported more than 140 projects, helping to create jobs, build local infrastructure, and elevate Ohio's national profile in the film and entertainment industries.
During the most recent round, nine feature films, three full television series, and two documentaries were awarded tax credits totaling more than $26 million, generating more than $87 million in eligible spending in Ohio and over $138 million in total production expenditures.
A total of $40 million is available this funding round. The application and additional program information can be found at development.ohio.gov/film.
