Get ready for the 3 Billion Trees Award!

Since the initiative started in 2020, much action has been taken. Majors are greening their cities with native or climate-resistant trees, creating a pleasant and healthy environment. Farmers are investing in agroforestry or planting trees and shrubs to fight erosion and benefit from the various ecosystem services they provide. Non-governmental organisations are restoring damaged forests and regenerating areas that suffered from forest fires.

But we must do more. To get to 3 billion by 2030, every action counts. The Commission has therefore created a new initiative: the 3 Billion Trees Award.

The award, which was announced at the European Tree of the Yearceremony, will recognise outstanding projects that contribute to increased tree coverage and biodiversity while inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards.

Because we know that protecting nature is not just the work of policymakers - it is a shared responsibility that belongs to all of us.

Each year, the award will spotlight different target groups, from youth and cities to foresters, farmers, and NGOs. It will also highlight key themes, such as ecological restoration, agroforestry, and urban greening.

Through this, we will not only honour great achievements but also encourage innovation and collaboration.

The first edition will kick off in Autumn 2025 at the start of the new planting season.
