The votes are in, and the students nominated for The Providence Journal Student of the Week received high marks.

But only one could be chosen for the top honor: Liam Oberley of South Kingstown High School.

Liam, a senior, was nominated as "a vital and versatile member of the school's music program."

"Liam came to SKHS as a transfer student in his sophomore year, initially joining the band and eventually joining the jazz band, orchestra and select choir, 'eSKape.' In addition to being a fine saxophonist, Liam has developed his singing as an All-State vocalist, learned concert percussion in the orchestra and took on the challenge to learn the tuba over the summer to best contribute to the band. Liam's dedication, musicianship, versatility and good nature distinguish him amongst his peers and make him most deserving of this honor," his nomination stated.

Liam received 53% of the vote.

The Journal has asked principals, teachers and guidance counselors from across the state to participate in the Student of the Week program by sending nominations for their top student. The decision on who comes out on top is up to voters.

Besides Liam, other students considered this week were:

Kaden Kelly, Chariho Regional High School

Kaden is a senior who has taken on many leadership roles within our school and Education Careers. She entered her final year of high school with an I CAN attitude. Kaden has a keen eye for seeing a peer who needs a friend or mentor and she acts on that need. Kaden dares to accept any challenge and aspires higher at all times.

Nathan Paciga, Westerly High School

Nate is a Junior at Westerly High School who has done a multitude of things to better the CTE/Culinary program while bringing an upbeat, positive attitude to class. In addition to being a productive leader in the Culinary program, Nate has been president of his class for the past few years. During the summer he volunteered to participate in catering events and continues to work on implementing a food insecurity program on campus. He is also an outstanding photographer at all sporting events, as well as other school activities. Nate is a role model for his peers and an amazing asset for the school.
