WINONA, Minn. — Adam Fravel, who was found guilty of killing Winona mother of two Madeline Kingsbury, has appealed his conviction and life sentence to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

The appeal was filed in Winona County District Court on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Fravel, 31, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a monthlong trial in November 2024. A Blue Earth County jury found him guilty on all four counts related to Kingsbury’s death. He was sentenced in Winona County Dec. 17, 2024.

The other charges were vacated because Minnesota law mandates life without parole for convictions of premeditated murder.

The trial was moved from Winona County where both Kingsbury and Fravel lived and where Kingsbury’s body was found due to pretrial publicity.

Greg Scanlan, assistant state public defender, filed a notice of appeal with Winona County District Court.

He was taken into custody by officers with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office and the West Concord Police Department.
Investigators allege Marcello Adan Canales, 20, was the driver who struck a 65-year-old walking two dogs on Aug. 14.
