Man, 47, found dead at Pa. prison

A 47-year-old Perry County man was found dead at a state prison in Centre County last week, officials said.

Kevin Byler, of Newport, was found unresponsive in his cell at State Correctional Institute (SCI) Rockview on March 14, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. It’s unclear what time he was discovered inside his cell.

Officials said prison staff and EMS responded and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 7:49 p.m.

Byler had been incarcerated at the State Correctional Institute since Jan 9, 2024. Officials said he was serving a four-to-eight-year sentence for strangulation on a Perry County conviction.

The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating while the Centre County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

Officials said the deceased’s next of kin has been notified.
