Will Alternative Architectures Rule Supercomputing?
In recent years we've seen some interesting new approaches to high-performance computing, in particular a shift away from traditional big processors and toward clusters of x86 CPUs with accelerators or coprocessors to speed up particular kinds of calculations. Coming out of last week's Supercomputing show, we saw Intel pushing to integrate its Xeon Phi coprocessor with its traditional Xeon server processor to make programming easier; Nvidia introducing a new version of its Tesla GPU accelerator; and Micron backing a very different kind of processor for even more specialized computing. And all this was happening at a time when accelerators and coprocessors are coming to dominate the Top 500 list of the world's fastest computers, leading some experts to suggest the existing benchmarks give too much weight to these processors.
