A key access route for Portland’s Washington Park is closed indefinitely after a March 29 landslide sent bowling ball-sized rocks tumbling onto the roadway below.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation said Southwest Tichner Drive between Burnside Street and Kingston Avenue would be closed indefinitely. They urged drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to obey posted barriers, saying another slide could occur without warning.

Portland officials said a marked detour is in place but that roads near Washington Park might have more traffic than usual.

Engineers with the city Bureau of Environmental Services are evaluating the site, and the transportation bureau expects to hire a contractor to stabilize the rock face and clear debris before reopening the road.
