The Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center St., Canastota, is hosting a new lecture series in celebration of this year’s Erie Canal Bicentennial Celebration. The second of the series will be at the library on Monday, April 28 at 6 p.m. Dr. Mark S. Ferrara will discuss stories of ordinary people who lived and worked along the canal.

This Carnegie Conversation will focus on the role of the poor and working class in the construction and development of the Erie Canal. There will be a discussion about how many of the people who helped build the canal did not share in the prosperity that the development of the canal brought to the area.

Ferrara is a professor of English at SUNY Oneonta. He has written numerous books, with his most recent titled, “The Raging Erie: Life and Labor Along the Erie Canal.”

The presentation will take place in the Children’s Room, located on the top floor of the Canastota Public Library. This location is accessible through the elevator at the parking lot entrance.
