Thanasi's Story
Thanasi Kokkinakis overcame a shoulder surgery in December 2015 to represent Australia at his debut Games at Rio 2016.
The 20-year-old played in the men’s singles competition, but went down to Portugal’s Gastao Elias 2-0 in the first round in a thrilling match. The tightly contested match saw each set taken into a tie-break with Elias coming out the eventual winner 7-6(4) 7-6(3).
The right handed player turned pro in 2013, and had a huge breakout in 2014 and 2015. He scored his first major win in the first round of Australian Open 2014 against Igor Sijsling.
He rose more than 450 ranking spots in 2014 to finish inside the world’s top 150 before cracking the top 100 for the first time in May 2015.
Bilingual, Kokkinakis speaks both English and Greek and hails from Adelaide.
