Internet of Things (IoT)

NIST understands the importance of the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it impacts our everyday lives in a big way. The IoT could revolutionize the American economy by enabling a fully connected world with on-demand access to data, systems, and each other. Since an IoT product might be defined as including an IoT device and any other product components that are necessary to using the IoT device beyond basic operational features, there are risks that come along with this level of connectivity—especially among so many devices across the globe. We must be able to trust the privacy, security, authenticity, and reliability of these devices, as well as the advanced networks that support them.

NIST’s collaborative work across IoT focuses on the role we can play to help guarantee our connected future. From developing a fundamental understanding of IoT systems, to supporting trustworthy smart and connected systems and networks, to helping to create IoT standards, to supporting our power grid and cybersecurity work—NIST is constantly exploring new approaches to solve next-generation challenges. We hope to help enable a world where diverse wireless devices and systems coexist without compromise and encourage innovation.

The Research

Projects & Programs

Neuromorphic Device Measurements

Ongoing
One type of device that is emerging as an attractive artificial synapse is the resistive switch, or memristor. These devices, which usually consist of a thin layer of oxide between two electrodes, have conductivity that depends on their history of applied voltage, and thus have highly nonlinear

Trustworthy Networks of Things

Ongoing
Our work focuses on network-centric approaches to improve the security and robustness of large scale deployments of IoT devices. The research and development of software-defined networking technologies in support of IoT security. The design and IETF standardization of Manufacturer Usage Description

USGv6 Program

Ongoing
OMB has directed [ OMB-2020, OMB-2010, OMB-2005] the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop the technical infrastructure (standards and testing) necessary to support wide-scale adoption of IPv6 in the US Government (USG). In response, NIST developed a technical standards

Growing the Internet of Things Into a Safe and Responsible Member of Your Household

Technology is supposed to help us, but sometimes it feels like for every step forward we take two steps back. Like many people (and despite my resistance), my family has accumulated a few internet of things (IoT) devices in our home. Our motivation for acquiring them has been to streamline our lives. For instance, when we needed to be able to play our newborn son’s music anywhere in the house, a
