The genesis of CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography in general, and Regional Centre Kochi in particular, can be traced back to the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) during 1960-65. Under the IIOE, three centres/ programmes namely, Indian Ocean Biological Centre (IOBC), Indian Ocean Physical Oceanography Centre (IOPOC) and International Biology Program (IBP) were established at Cochin in 1962. Subsequently in 1966, the first marine research laboratory, National Institute of Oceanography was established at Goa under CSIR by merging IOBC, IBP and IOPOC. NIO has three regional centres at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Kochi.
