Panellists described the unique mental health experiences faced by those in the LGBT+ community working in media. A study from the Film and TV charity, of which our CFO Suki Gill is a Trustee, found LGBT+ workers in our industry are heartbreakingly 22% more likely to take their lives.

Here at ViacomCBS we would like to help lead the change by creating safe spaces for open and honest discussions so we can end the stigma around mental health and encourage our employees to be open about their experiences.

Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid to Close on Sunday 8th September 2019

Parques Reunidos has announced the unfortunate news that Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid, a 6,000 square metre Nickelodeon-branded Family Entertainment Center located at the intu Xanadú shopping and leisure center in Arroyomolinos, Spain, will close its doors on Sunday 8th September 2019, after less than 12 months in operation.


The reason for the closure of Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid was not disclosed, however, it is thought that below-expected returns from the centre, which opened on Monday 17th December 2018, as well as from Nickelodeon Adventure Murcia in the Thader Shopping Center in Murcia, Spain influenced this decision, which also saw the leisure park operator cancel plans to open new entertainment centres in Príncipe Pio in Madrid, Times Square in New York, and in Lisbon, Portugal, including a new Nickelodeon Family Entertainment Center in Dolce Vita Tejo in Lisbon.

The opening of Nickelodeon Adventure Lakeside in London, UK will still go ahead as planned during autumn 2019, and Nickelodeon Adventure Murcia will continue to operate as normal. Each park falls within the agreement reached between Parques Reunidos and Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) in March 2016 to theme different areas in the Group’s theme parks after Nickelodeon’s shows and characters.

Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid includes different spaces themed after some of Nickelodeon's most beloved characters, thus offering a completely immersive experience. Among all these interactive games, visitors are able to take part in jellyfish races, play an organ made of corals and obtain their sailing license at SpongeBob's Boating School Blast! in the SpongeBob SquarePants zone, and slide down the famous Lookout Tower in the PAW Patrol area. Other fun areas in the Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid include special Dora the Explorer and The Fairly OddParents zones, as well as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adventure course with routes through tunnels and over climbing walls, and a Rugrats zone for toddlers. Classic Nickelodeon fans can also find a Stimpy statue inspired by the lovable cat from The Ren & Stimpy Show.

The center also includes a birthday room themed after popular Nickelodeon characters, an interactive area, a 4D cinema, and educational areas for school groups. In addition, some of the most popular Nickelodeon characters are present at Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid so that all children that visit the center can take home a picture as a souvenir to remind them of their super fun family day.

Nickelodeon Adventure visitors also have a chance to take a break and grab a snack at the bespoke Slime Café, while also wrapping up their experience at the Nickelodeon Store, where all intu Xanadú customers are able to purchase Nickelodeon official merchandise.

Parques Reunidos Opens 'Nickelodeon Adventure' Theme Park in intu Xanadú in Spain

Leisure park operator Parques Reunidos today, Monday 17th December 2018, opened Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid, a brand-new 6,000 square metre Nickelodeon-branded Family Entertainment Center, at the intu Xanadú shopping and leisure center in Arroyomolinos, Spain!

The opening of Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid is part of Viacom International Media Networks' (VIMN) partnership with Parques Reunidos to open Nickelodeon-branded indoor family entertainment centres in shopping centers around Europe, and follows the opening of Nickelodeon Adventure Murcia in Merlin Properties' Thader Shopping Center in Murcia, Spain in December 2017. VIMN Kids Taps Louise Bucknole for New Role of Vice President of Programming for Nickelodeon and Milkshake!

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has named Louise Bucknole as its new Vice President (VP) of programming, VIMN Kids.


In the newly created role, Bucknole is being tasked with driving ratings performance and brand strength for the Nickelodeon channels and Channel 5′s preschool programming block Milkshake! in the UK.

She will look to develop British preschool content to compete with global leaders in the field, continue to develop the VIMN Kids team and evolve both kids brands to continue to serve and reach their audiences.

In her Milkshake role, Bucknole will look to develop and commission British preschool content, and will also have a business development remit to work with commercial, consumer products and events teams to expand the brand and ensure best in class activations in addition to her responsibility to source for development commissioned and acquired content.

“Louise has an incredible wealth of experience in the children’s television industry across both the PSB and pay TV sectors and her expertise in scheduling and channel planning will help us to further drive ratings improvement for both Nickelodeon and Milkshake,” said Alison Bakunowich, Senior Vice President (SVP), General Manager (GM), Nickelodeon UK and Milkshake.

Bucknole will report into Bakunowich and will have a secondary reporting line into Ben Frow, director of programmes, Channel 5.

Most recently director of programming at Disney Channels UK and Ireland, Bucknole has been described as a passionate advocate of UK children’s content. In her previous role she was responsible for leading all strategic, editorial, commercial and operational aspects of content strategy. Bucknole was instrumental in key commissions including Goalmouth, First Class Chefs, Art Attack, Furry Friends, Access All Areas as well as acquisitions such as Curious George, Miraculous, Hotel Transylvania and Pokémon.

Prior to her six year stint at Disney, Bucknole worked as head of scheduling, BBC Children’s, where she oversaw content strategy for CBBC, CBeebies, the children’s blocks on BBC One, BBC Two and iPlayer.

Bucknole said: “I am delighted to be joining Viacom International Media Networks where I will work across both the Nickelodeon and Milkshake brands to bring much loved content to kids to excite, inspire and entertain them.

“This brings together my 20 years content and broadcasting experience across the commercial and PSB kids sectors and I can’t wait to join this brilliant team.”

The hire follows a number of recent deals for Milkshake!, including a third-season commission for Nevision’s hybrid series Floogals and a pickup of the new 22nd season of Mattel’s Thomas & Friends. Recent activity for Nick UK, meanwhile, includes the launch of a Nick Jr. Adventure Centre last month and the acquisition of all five seasons of Novel Entertainment’s Horrid Henry, with a further 42 new episodes currently in development, which are set to premiere on Nicktoons UK & Ireland from 2019.

Nickelodeon is currently the number one commercial broadcaster in pay TV homes and Channel 5 Milkshake is set for its fifth year of growth.

Russian Licence Breakthrough For Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Россия

Three channels operated by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Россия have had their status radically changed in Russia.


According to RBC and AKTR, this follows the award of terrestrial licences to Nickelodeon, Paramount Comedy (the Russian equivalent of Comedy Central) and VH1 Europe by the regulator Roskomnadzor.

Although the licences cover only one location – the city of Slavyansk na Kunbani in the Krasnodar region – it means that they are no longer subject to the restrictions on advertising imposed on pay-TV channels since 2015.

Since then, there have until now only been two instances in which foreign companies – Discovery and MTG’s Viasat – have obtained the right to carry advertising.

However, in each case they have had to enter into a partnership with Russia’s National Media Group (NMG) in which the latter holds a majority (80%) stake.

VIMN Africa Appoints Fathima Beckmann As Director Of Communications

Fathima Beckmann has been appointed as the new director of communications at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa. In her new role, Beckmann is responsible for Viacom's youth, pop culture, and entertainment brands Nickelodeon, MTV Base, MTV, Comedy Central, VH1 Classic, and BET International in the region.

Beckmann brings with her experience from the technology and financial services industries where she held executive roles in marketing, communications, and corporate affairs across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East with blue-chip organisations Intel Corp., Microsoft, Huawei, Multichoice, and Old Mutual Emerging Markets, where she served as group communications executive.

Alex Okosi, executive vice president and managing director (MD) of VIMN Africa, says, "Fathima is a seasoned international communications leader and brings valuable cross-industry and geographic experience to our expanded executive team. Her strategic thinking and expertise will add great value to our business. We are excited to have her on board."

Beckmann adds, "It is a privilege to join the Viacom Africa team, with their portfolio of world-class brands that showcase the best of African and international content, talent, and experiences. I am grateful for this unique opportunity."

Beckmann has been in the industry for more than 20 years and has a portfolio of projects, including managing the PR team across 40 countries for Intel’s International Science and Engineering Awards. She was also part of the leadership team at Old Mutual Emerging Markets who, together with the Women’s Investment Portfolio Holdings (WIPHOLD) Consortium, developed the communications strategy for the 10-year broad-based black business partners deal in South Africa.

In addition to working in South Africa, Beckmann was based in Dubai from 2009 to 2012 in regional HQ roles with Huawei and Microsoft, which extended across the Middle East and North Africa.

Beckmann holds a BA communications science degree from the University of South Africa and is a board member of the Maths Centre, a non-profit organisation in mathematics, science, technology, and entrepreneurship education.

She is also a founding member of the Digital Interactive Media Association, which was the first body to represent the industry and contributed a key role in digital representation at the Loerie® Awards.

Mi9 To Represent Viacom Digital Properties In New Zealand

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) have partnered with Mi9, one of New Zealand's leading digital media companies, for Mi9 to represent Viacom's digital properties in New Zealand.


VIMN, a unit of Viacom Inc, is comprised of many of the world’s most popular multimedia entertainment brands including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, Comedy Central and more. Collectively, VIMN’s digital properties reach an audience of hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders

“We are immensely excited about this new partnership with Viacom International Media Networks,” Rhys Heron, Managing Director (MD) of Mi9 New Zealand, told B&T. “MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Comedy Central all have real brand cache that we believe is highly attractive to marketers.”

“The inclusion of these iconic brands into our suite of digital properties represents a new and exciting strategic relationship for Mi9 New Zealand and offers our clients strong digital properties with a majority youth audience.”

According to Nielsen Answers, 15-to-34-year-olds make up more than 72 per cent of monthly digital unique audiences for MTV and 83 per cent for Comedy Central in New Zealand.

“MTV and Comedy Central content is hugely popular with young audiences, particularly on mobile. This partnership offers New Zealand advertisers access to what is a highly desirable and difficult-to-reach audience,” said Heron.

VIMN will also work with Mi9 to offer brands content integrations where it can create a custom environment for advertisers and their brands online. These integrations can be supported offline with events and social media activity.

“Viacom International Media Networks is a leading provider of entertainment content and experiences, and our brands are immensely popular with New Zealand audiences,” said Vanessa Winley, VIMN’s director of advertising sales and brand partnerships.

“The partnership with Mi9 allows New Zealand marketers the opportunity to connect with preschool, kid, youth and young adult audiences across our entire digital portfolio in new, exciting and creative ways.”

The addition of Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV and Comedy Central adds to Mi9 New Zealand’s extensive suite of premium digital properties, which includes more than 2.6 million desktop users across Outlook, Skype, MSN, Daily Mail and Ticketek.
