Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Co-creator Kevin Eastman Talks About How He Started A Independent Pop-Culture Dynasty

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cocreator Kevin Eastman Went for a Modest Underground Comics Career. He Started an Independent Pop-Culture Dynasty Instead.

You can't create a comics dynasty on purpose. In fact, it seems helpful not to try. Spider-Man, Superman, Batman—all were cranked out by middle-aged day-jobbers on deadline. They were intended to fill a bit of newsprint and then make way for the next fantastical character, not to permanently lodge in the pop-culture pantheon.

In the eighties, Kevin Eastman set out for a modest career in underground comics, which is a reasonable goal when you've co-created a book about anthropomorphic turtles who learned martial arts from a talking rat and who hang out in a sewer with a TV reporter. Imagining that this premise might birth an enduring multimedia phenomenon would not have been reasonable, to put it mildly. But that's what happened.

Eastman and co-creator Peter Laird revolutionized the comics industry by ducking around the superhero monopolies and self-publishing in black-and-white with wild success at a time when this was unheard of. They still own the characters to this day, after all the movies and cartoons, the toys and costumes—and the Turtles are still in print, now in color and published by IDW.

Eastman is one of dozens of creators, also including indie stars like Brandon Graham and mainstream fixtures like Walt and Louise Simonson, who headed to the Raleigh Convention Center for NC Comicon: Oak City this weekend. Indy Week reached Eastman at his home studio in San Diego, where he was working on sketches for a Batman-TMNT crossover. He discussed how Heavy Metal magazine inspired the Turtles before the Turtles bought him Heavy Metal, getting sued over the word "cowabunga" by Buffalo Bob from Howdy Doody, and his favorite bits of Turtle-abilia.

INDY: You were a reader of self-published comics before you took self-publishing to a new level with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How did you discover independent comics at a time when they were less easy to find than they are now?

KEVIN EASTMAN: I grew up with what was in the spinner racks at the local drug store, but then along came Heavy Metal magazine. In 1977, I bought the first issue. Heavy Metal published some amazing European talents, but they also published American underground comics. I really flipped out over Richard Corben, who's definitely my number-two influence after Jack Kirby. It was such a fantastic and bizarre style, it pushed and stretched the imagination in so many ways. In my search for Corben material, I went to The Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square and they had this massive underground comics selection. Most important, I found Dave Sims's Aardvark-Vanaheim, publishing Cerebus. Reprints of underground comics from the sixties and seventies, coupled with what the new guys like Dave Sim were doing, throw in a dash of Heavy Metal—that really pushed me toward what I wanted to do in comics.

You bought Heavy Metal in 1991 and edited it for fifteen years, and you're still the publisher. Was that like a childhood dream come true?

Oh my goodness, yeah. I joke that if you think about it, my discovery of Heavy Metal in 1977 led me to self-publishing, and then when Peter and I created the Turtles together, because we owned and controlled all things Turtles, we also profited from it. Heavy Metal helped me create the Turtles, so I could then buy Heavy Metal.

When you and Peter Laird started publishing the Turtles comics, did you have any inkling they might become multimedia pop-culture icons, or did it just seem like this totally niche and crazy thing you were doing?

Oh yeah, we definitely knew. [Laughs] No, of course not. If you look at the first issue, it was a complete story. We didn't think we'd sell that many copies or do another issue. We just deeply loved the idea and had so much fun doing the kind of comic book we wanted to read. We thought it was a fun homage and parody of comics, something we had to get out of our system. When it started selling, people at comic shops and fans started writing us saying, when are you going to do issue two? It came out in January 1985, and we made enough money—I think we sold about fifteen thousand copies—to pay rent and draw comics full-time. I point to 1985 as the year the dream came true, this lifelong fantasy we used to tell our parents about, drawing comic books for a living, and they look at you with that mortified look, like, oh my goodness, we're going to have one of those kids who never moves out of the basement. By the time Hollywood came knocking, at the top of the black-and-white-comics boom, we were selling about a hundred thousand copies an issue, which was mind-blowing.

You didn't make up the word "cowabunga," but you might as well have. How did that phrase enter the Turtles' lexicon; how did you make up their slang?

It really came out of the animated series. If you look at the comics, there were kind of funky pop-culture references, like Casey Jones saying "Goongala Goongala," which is something Tarzan said whenever he wanted an elephant or a lion to do something. I remember watching Beach Blanket Bingo and these Saturday morning matinee movies with this California surfer-dude thing going on. Growing up in the woods in Maine, it was about as alien as you could imagine. We just riffed on that. "Cowabunga" evolved with David Wise, the writer of the early animated episodes, and became the catchphrase that caught on. We got sued by Buffalo Bob from Howdy Doody.

Right, I read that's where the term first came from?

Yeah, he said we basically stole it. I had never seen it, it was before my time. We were like, no, we stole it from Annette Funicello! I don't know if it had transferred into public domain or common usage, but the case was dismissed, let's put it that way.

A lot of our readers will know the Turtles from the movies and the cartoon more than from the comics. How are the comics different?

The original comics were really written for Peter and myself, intended for an older audience—though neither of us are huge fans of really gory stuff and swearing—but it had a bit more edge to it than what mainstream comics were doing. When we adapted them into the first cartoon series, we knew this was for a much younger audience and a number of things were softened. The first cover where I painted the Turtles in color, they all had red bandanas. When they wanted to do them as toys and cartoons, they said, can we come up with a way to tell them apart better? Peter came up with the idea of different-colored bandanas, which I thought was awesome.

The kids version reached a much wider audience. It was years and years until a lot of those initial fans of the cartoons discovered the comics. We kind of got them at a young age when they were buying the toys and watching the cartoon, and when they got older and still had passion for the Turtles, they discovered this older-audience Turtles. It's so humbling and cool when we do conventions and see parents who were fans of the original series, and their kids have now discovered the Turtles through Nickelodeon's cartoon series, all dressed up together.

With the incredible amount of Turtles stuff out there, do you have any favorite toys or properties?

Absolutely. The first live-action movie, directed by Steve Barron with incredible costumes by Jim Henson, I thought was a perfect blend of the original black-and-white series and the humor of the animated series. And the first round of toys in 1988. I remember when Peter and I stumbled into a Kay-Bee Toys in Springfield, Massachusetts, and saw them for the first time. They would do Turtles as different characters, and the Star Trek Turtles—I was a huge Star Trek fan growing up, so I loved that. And of course, nothing could take away from what Peter and I originally did, working in the same room passing pages back and forth, because that's where it all started.

Nickelodeon Movies' "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Tops UK Box Office

The licensing business news website Licensing.biz and Screen International, a leading film industry resource, are reporting the very exciting Nickelodeon Movies news in the following articles that Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures' brand-new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie jumped straight to the top of the UK box office upon opening at cinemas across the UK on Friday 17th October 2014! The film topped the box office with a £4.8m debut, including £1.56m in previews!

Nickelodeon and Paramount's reboot posted a $7.7m (£4.8m) bow from the 522 cinemas across the UK the movie is currently showing in, including $2.5m (£1.56m) in previews. The movies' Friday 17th to Sunday 19th October 2014 takings of $5.2m (£3.2m) would have also seen it top the chart!

The result marks director Jonathan Liebesman's best-ever UK opening, surpassing "Wrath of the Titans", which bowed with $3.5m (£2.2m) from 466 sites in 2012. That film is also Liebesman's highest UK grosser at $12.6m (£7.8m), a tally that TMNT will easily overtake.

Additionally, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" has already outgrossed the popular franchises' 2007 CG-animated reboot "TMNT" ($4.7m/£2.9m), and its opening bodes well for the film during the upcoming half-term school holidays with little direct competition.

Following the movies' hugely successful opening weekend in the USA in August 2014, Nick Movies and Paramount announced they will be making a sequel TMNT film, which is currently set for release in theaters (cinemas) on Friday 3rd June 2016!

Nickelodeon And Paramount Announce "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Sequel; To Be Released In 2016

The entertainment industry news websites Deadline.com and The Hollywood Reporter are reporting the exciting Nickelodeon Movies news in the following articles that, following the hugely successful opening weekend for Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures' brand-new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie, Paramount Pictures today, Sunday 10th August 2014, announced that Nick and Paramount are making sequel TMNT film, which is currently set for release in theaters (cinemas) on Friday 3rd June 2016! The announcement was made by Brad Grey, the chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Paramount Pictures.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2', the second movie from Nick and Paramount's new TMNT film franchise, will again be produced by Michael Bay alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec ("Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocal") are also coming aboard again to write the sequel and will also receive an executive producing credit. It's not clear if Jonathan Liebsman will again direct.

It is also currently unknown whether Megan Fox and Will Arnett will return to reprise their roles of fearless reporter April O'Neil and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick.

Upon opening worldwide on Friday 8th August 2014, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies' "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" has wowed in its North American debut by making $65 million so far at the box office. Worldwide, the movie has opened to $97.3 million.

From THR:
Box Office: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Wows With $65M Domestic Debut

UPDATED: The Michael Bay-produced movie steals the top spot from "Guardians of the Galaxy," with Paramount immediately announcing a summer 2016 sequel.

Launching a new film franchise, Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wowed in its North American debut with $65 million, becoming the second August tentpole after Guardians of the Galaxy to wildly overperform. Worldwide, the movie opened to $97.3 million, prompting Paramount chief Brad Grey and producer Michael Bay to immediately announce a sequel, set for release June 3, 2016.

TMNT is a needed win for Paramount, which makes fewer movies than other studios. It also exploits parent company Viacom's various divisions.

TMNT screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Neme are returning to write the script for the sequel.

The family friendly film, earning a B CinemaScore, easily bested Guardians to claim the No. 1 spot domestically. Guardians certainly held its own, however, falling a respectable 56 percent in its second weekend to $41.5 million for a domestic total of $175.9 million. Globally, the Marvel Studios and Disney tentpole raced past the $300 million mark after earning another $40.1 million for a foreign total of $137.3 million and world haul of $313.2 million.

In North America, Guardians and TMNT are helping to shore up the otherwise troubled summer box office, where revenue was down a steep 20 percent two weeks ago. Revenue is now down by 17 percent or less.

Guardians placed No. 2 domestically, followed by new entires Into the Storm and adult dramedy The Hundred-Foot Journey, which opened to $18 million and $11.1 million, respectively. The weekend's fourth new nationwide film, Step Up All In, opened to $6.6 million, a franchise low. The dance film is making up ground overseas, where it has earned $37.7 million for a worldwide total of $44.2 million.

Heading into the weekend, the $125 million TMNT was expected to debut in the $50 million to $55 million range, and its better-than-expected performance underscores the pent-up appetite for family fare, even though it is rated PG-13. Bay's Platinum Dunes shepherded TMNT for Paramount and Nickelodeon. (There's already a new television series.)

Males fueled the film (61 percent), while 45 percent of Friday's audience was under the age of 25.

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, TMNT stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Danny Woodburn, Abby Elliott, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson and Minae Noji. It's based on the characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

In the film, four outcast brothers rise from the sewer and discovery their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while working with a fearless reporter (Fox) to save New York City from Shredder and his evil Foot Clan.

"To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for. Along with our partners Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes, and of course Cyma Zarghami and everyone at Nickelodeon, we are thrilled with this weekend’s result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one," Grey said in a statement.

Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman added, "Launching a new take on the turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before."

New Line and Warner Bros.' tornado disaster film Into the Storm, earning a B CinemaScore, opened to less than half of Twister's $41.2 million debut nearly 20 years ago, not accounting for inflation. (That film was also from Warner Bros.) Lacking any big stars but boasting plenty of tornadoes, Into the Storm cost under $50 million to make.

Into the Storm played heavily to females (58 percent), while a full 71 percent of the audience was over the age of 25. Steven Quale directed the found-footage movie

Going after adults was DreamWorks and Participant Media's dramedy The Hundred-Foot Journey, about dueling French and Indian chefs in a small French town.

The $22 million film, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and based on the book by Richard C. Morais, has plenty of pedigree behind the camera in producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, while star Helen Mirren is a big draw for older moviegoers. Middling reviews likely muted the film's showing, although it did boast an A CinemaScore. More than 40 percent of the audience was over the age of 50.

From Summit Entertainment, Step Up All In is the fifth installment in the dance franchise. Trish Sie directed the movie, which stars Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Stephen "tWitch" Boss, Misha Gabriel, Izabella Miko, Alyson Stoner and Adam Sevani. Step Up All In received a B+ CinemaScore, with females making up 59 percent of the audience.

At the specialty box office, CBS Films' romantic comedy What if, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, launched in 20 theaters in 10 top markets, grossing $130,000 for a location average of $6,500, on par with Promised Land and just behind The Young Victoria in terms of location average.

What If earned an A- CinemaScore, and will continue to expand next weekend.
Also, from Deadline Hollywood:
'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Sequel Underway; Bay To Return

On the strength of the $65M-plus domestic opening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Paramount announced this AM that a sequel is underway with Michael Bay steering the production once again. The project from Nickelodeon Movies will bow on June 3, 2016. Bay will produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & AndrĂ© Nemec (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocal) are again coming aboard to write the sequel and will also receive an exec producing credit. It's not clear if Jonathan Liebsman will again direct. Kudos to Paramount's marketing team led by Josh Greenstein — talk about negotiating from a place of strength.

The date for the sequel will come only a week after the studio bows Monster Trucks and in the same weekend scheduled currently for Warner Bros.' San Andreas starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and 20th Century Fox's B.O.O. Bureau of Otherworldly Operations starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Seth Rogen so, I would think, that eventually one of the three studios is going to blink and move off the date.

The surprise box office hit bowed in 17 markets internationally this weekend to take in an estimated $28.7M (final figures will be out tomorrow). So its worldwide total is around $97.3M, depending on today's grosses. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been playing well both during the family moviegoing matinees and the older 25 to 35 demo-pushing evening and late night showings. Paramount and Michael Bay who together just launched another franchise this summer after kicking it earlier in the summer with a gonzo $95.7M opening for Transformers: Age of Extinction. It's been a Michael Bay summer for the studio. Some have called the latest Turtles revamp Transformers with Turtles.

"Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before," said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount's Film Group in a statement this AM. "The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."

Much of its opening success was propelled not only by family audiences, which the Paramount marketing team was largely responsible for getting them into the theaters, but also the 25 and and 35 year-olds — kids who grew up watching the animated series on Saturday mornings.

Nickelodeon Movies Unveils Second "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Teaser Trailer

To celebrate Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie, Nick and Paramount have today, Tuesday 24th June 2014, released the second teaser trailer for their brand-new TMNT film, which you can watch in the online streaming video below!

Nick and Paramount's latest TMNT trailer showcases the cast of the movie, and features lots of turtle power. The trail also gives a first look at Whoopi Goldberg's character, Bernadette Thompson, and a good look at Shredder's claws (Watch out Master Splinter!).

The story this time around introduces a new generation to the turtles — and they're definitely turtles, for any fans still worried about rumors of a new, alien origin. There's even a knowing exchange in the trailer, seemingly addressing those concerns.

"So they're aliens?" asks Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick. "No," April O'Neil (Megan Fox) replies. "That's stupid."

There's also an interesting twist included in the spot. It appears that William Fichtner, who is credited at "The Shredder," might not be the guy in the suit, at least early on in an attack that leaves Master Splinter in need of avenging. Is the rat sensei in danger of dying? That would certainly shake things up in the series.

Leading up to the release of their second "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" trailer, Paramount Pictures used social media to help spread the word about their upcoming TMNT movie — with some help from one of the films stars, Megan Fox. In a YouTube video released yesterday, Fox encouraged fans to visit turtlereveal.com and to Tweet the name of their favorite Ninja Turtle character in order to unlock four exclusive posters, each featuring one of the Turtle brothers, giving them their best look yet at the reimagined versions of the Heroes in a Half Shell - Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. You can view all four of Paramount's TMNT posters under the trailer below. Once all four posters were unlocked, the new trailer was uploaded.

In "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan."

The film, directed by Michael Bay ("Transformers"), is an reboot of the iconic franchise and will feature a origins story for the Heroes in a Half Shell, with Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher stepping into the shells of Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo respectively. "Ninja Turtles" also stars Whoopi Goldberg as Bernadette Thompson, and Danny Woodburn as Splinter.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" will be released in theatres and RealD 3D in the USA on Friday 8th August 2014 and in Digital 3D and 2D in cinemas across the UK on Friday 17th October 2014.

Paramount Pictures Pushes Back UK Release Date For Nickelodeon Movies' "Ninja Turtles" To October 2014

The entertainment news website Den of Geek is reporting the unfortunate news that, after Paramount recently pushed back the US theatrical release date of Michael Bay's upcoming brand new Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures "Ninja Turtles" movie, based on Nick's hit CG-animated "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" television series, from Friday 6th June 2013 2014 to Friday 8th August 2014, Paramount Pictures have now also pushed back the UK cinema release date for Nick's all-new "Ninja Turtles" film from Friday 15th August 2013 to Friday 17th October 2014 - two months after America gets the movie:

UPDATED: Further UK delay for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

It looks like the UK release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been put back even further...

UPDATE: Whilst the US release has been put back to August 15th, we're now hearing that the UK release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been put back even further. Whilst the US release remains in August, we're now hearing that UK release will be Friday October 17th 2014 - two months after America gets the film.

Here's the original story we ran...

Production has wrapped on the much talked about new take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with Michael Bay producing and Jonathan Liebesman directing. The film was originally going to be released in December 2013, but some time ago the decision had been made to shift it back to June 2014.

However, Paramount has now jiggled its schedule again, and it's moved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back a couple more months. The US release date has now shunted from June 6th 2014 to August 8th 2014.

That actually brings it more in line with the UK release. The film has long since been on the UK schedules for August 15th.

The reason for the change? It's apparently to move it away from Michael Bay's other big 2014 release, Transformers 4. The new release date is a less competitive, although it'll leave Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opening a week after Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy.

We'll have more on the film as we hear it.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Pushed Back Two Months to August 2014

The Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has experienced another delay, albeit a relatively small one: Paramount Pictures has pushed back the film’s opening from June 6, 2014 to Aug. 8, 2014.

It’s at least the third move for the comic-book adaptation, whose opening was first shuffled from December 2013 to May 2014 following a production shutdown last summer, and then from May 16, 2014 to June 6.

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman from a script by Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Megan Fox as April O’Neil, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick, Danny Woodburn as Master Splinter, and William Fichtner as Shredder.
