LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Alexi Neiffer, the award-winning artistic senior who will graduate this year from both Pottsgrove High School and the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center, returned Tuesday (May 14, 2019) for a final year before the Pottsgrove School District Board of School Directors. Its members offered her their congratulations for “becoming an entrepreneur.”
The district’s smiling superintendent, Dr. William Shirk (at top), presented Neiffer with a board certificate of commendation.
Neiffer’s talents are most recently receiving national attention in more than 600 Hot Topic young teen apparel stores across the U.S. and online, where a SpongeBob SquarePants-inspired T-shirt she designed is being sold to the public. She won $300 (USD) as a prize in the design contest sponsored by the store and Nickelodeon, and also is also receiving a commission payment on every shirt sold.
As board President Robert Lindgren noted, Neiffer has appeared before directors annually during her high school studies for other awards and honors with other sponsors. The Hot Topic honor may prove to be her most lucrative.
Her art for a SpongeBob SquarePants T-Shirt Design Contest held during October 2018, features Squidward Tentacles attending the grave of his hopes and dreams - which has become a favorite meme among fans - was selected by that animated show’s co-executive producers, Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, and store Vice President Ed Labay.
“I grew up watching SpongeBob, and as I got older I realized that I related more to (one of its characters,) Squidward Tentacles,” Neiffer told The Post when the award was announced. “This inspired me to create a design (above) based on Squidward, and his depressing but humorous life. Ironically, my ‘hopes and dreams’ came true when I found out my design will be sold at my favorite store.”
Neiffer since 2016 has been a student of professional designer David Batory in the career center’s commercial arts classes. She was just accepted into the art and design program at Kutztown University, where she will study communication design. In her comments Tuesday to board members, she thanked Batory and other teachers at both schools for their guidance and help.

Parkdale's Angel Carrillo wins Inner Ninja Turtle challenge
Nationwide street art challenge
TNMT street art challenge
Parkdale resident Angel Carillo's colour design won the Canada-wide Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle street art challenge.
Parkdale street artist Angel Carrillo won the Inner Ninja Turtle street art challenge organized by Nickelodeon and Walmart after nationwide votes were counted on May 12.
Carrillo's design will be featured on a T-shirt available in Walmart this fall.
The street art challenge had four Toronto artists design their own version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles using graffiti art. After a month of voting on designs, Canadians chose Carrillo's design for the winner.
"I told Nickelodeon I want to retouch the design," Carrillo said. "I'm gonna resubmit a more detailed design. When it's printed on the T-shirt, I want people to understand the difference between graffiti art and contemporary art."
"It's not like a graphic designer trying to do graffiti, it's a graffiti artist doing art," he added.
Carrillo is a well-known Toronto street artist. His work ranges from tattoos to wall murals, demonstrating his wide range of artistic ability. Carrillo is active in the Parkdale community and works as an art coordinator and educator. He aims to bring graffiti art to the mainstream and demonstrate it is a vital art form. He's part of an art guild called Wallnoize, which aims for this goal.
"We showcase graffiti arts and provide them materials and a space for them to paint," Carrillo said. "We have real street artists with so much talent in the city, it's nice to know that guys like Nickelodeon and Walmart are taking notice. I say to these guys, why go to New York when you have talent here in Toronto?"
Carrillo credits his friends and colleagues in Parkdale for the win, as he says they supported him with votes and encouragement.
"I want to say a big thank you to my Parkdale community," he said. "I do it basically for Parkdale, I represent Parkdale, I've never strayed away from that and I never will."
Carrillo's retouched design of the Ninja Turtles will be available on a T-shirt in Walmart this fall.

"We are thrilled to partner with FLuD to develop Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles products," said Alix Kram , Vice President, Lifestyle and Retail Marketing, Nickelodeon Consumer Products. "Not only are we combining our two iconic brands, but we have the opportunity to work with amazing and influential artists like Ron English to develop visually stimulating and memorable pieces."
Each watch features an over-sized face with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graphic and a graffiti-style logo on the band. The launch is also joined by the release of four graphic Tees carrying a similar motif.
"Ron English is a legend, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had every kid in the 1980s dreaming of turning into a turtle – and I'm sure they had pet sales for turtles flying through the roof too!," said Doug Cohen , Founder and CEO, FLuD Watches. "Being able to see a legendary artist put his spin on an iconic creation like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is absolutely crazy – and being able to have the canvas he uses for it be a FLuD watch, is just an honor."
Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered on Sept. 29 to 3.9 million viewers and has since grown in its audience double-digits. The 26-episode, half-hour action-comedy series breathes new life into the wildly popular band of reptile brothers played by Jason Biggs (American Pie) as "Leonardo," Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as "Donatello" (Paulsen also voiced the original "Raphael" from 1987-1996 in the very first TMNT series), Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as "Michelangelo" and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) as "Raphael,". The series airs regularly on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT).
About Ron English
One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, New York-based painter, designer and street artist Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books, television, and album covers. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, to create a hilarious visual language that turns advertising into "subvertizing" and parody into illumination.
About FLuD
FLuD was established in 2007 by a few good men who loved food, fashion and good business. In an effort to bring the watch back to its rightful place as one of the ultimate accessories, the concept for FLuD was born. Our goal is to create unique, fresh watches for the casual and streetwear scene without the pretentiousness or price tag. Fresh style, nice price, it's a simple formula. We could get wordier, but it's not what FLuD is about - it's all about the watches.
