The Illuminations Switch-On party is the biggest, brightest night in Blackpool’s calendar, and this year's celebration on September 1 promises to deliver an experience Blackpool has never seen before. The best part? It's back outdoors and free for everyone to attend!

Look forward to a spectacular parade, free family entertainment on the Tower Festival Headland, the exciting Switch-On moment, an illuminating Tower light show and fireworks over the seafront.

Nickelodeon Parade

Join us for The Nickelodeon Grand Parade - a spectacular procession along the Golden Mile, showcasing the beloved characters from the world's most popular children's TV channel.

The celebrations will kick off with a vibrant and lively float parade, featuring larger-than-life versions of your favourite characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and friends, PAW Patrol, Baby Shark, Transformers, and the ghouls from Monster High. They will be joined by around 100 dancers, musicians and street performers as they make their way from Central Pier to the Tower Festival Headland for a free family party.

Among the performers in the grand parade will be Lancashire’s own 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band, a hugely talented group of young musicians who have performed all over the UK, including an appearance at Windsor Castle in front of the Queen.

Switch-On Moment

One of the UK’s best-loved music stars is to switch on the 2023 Blackpool Illuminations. Fresh from her appearance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage and on the back of the release of her brand new studio album, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor will perform three live tracks on the Tower Festival Headland on Friday 1 September before pulling the switch to trigger four months of Illuminations.

Sophie said: “I’m so excited to be coming back to Blackpool to perform a few of my favourite tracks and to switch on the iconic Blackpool Illuminations! I can’t wait to see you all there!”

Free entertainment, light show and fireworks

That’s not all! Once the switch is pulled by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, the celebration will continue with a free family party with live music and family entertainment, leading up to a grand finale with the iconic celebrity Switch-On moment. Get ready for even more celebrations to follow when The Blackpool Tower bursts into life with a specially-commissioned sound and light show that will be synchronised with LED wristbands to be given out to spectators, topped off with a fireworks finale over the seafront.

The whole event will be free to access with no tickets required.

The Switch-On ceremony marks the start of the annual Illuminations display, which will shine nightly from September 1, 2023, to January 1, 2024.

What time is the event?

The build-up will commence from 7pm, with the float parade scheduled to start around 7.30pm. The main celebrations on the Tower Festival Headland will take place between approximately 8pm and 9.30pm (Note: Times could be subject to change so check for updates on this page).

Do I need tickets?

No, not this year. The whole event will be free to access with no tickets required. Just rock up early and take your place along the stretch of promenade to enjoy the show.

Who is switching on this year's Blackpool Illuminations?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is this year’s Switch-On star. The singer will perform three live tracks and turn on the iconic Blackpool Illuminations on Friday 1 September.

A spectacular parade featuring the stars of the world’s favourite children’s TV channel is to be held in Blackpool to mark the start of this year’s Illuminations season.

The Nickelodeon Grand Parade will be staged along the Golden Mile on the evening of Friday 1 September as part of this year’s Switch-On celebrations.

It will see the Switch-On moment returning to the outdoors after three years of being staged indoors due to pandemic restrictions.

This year, the celebrations will get underway with a colourful, larger-than-life float parade featuring the likes of SpongeBob SquarePants and friends, PAW Patrol, Baby Shark, Transformers, and Monster High. They will be accompanied along the seafront route by marching bands and dancers.

The parade is scheduled to start from Central Pier and head along the Promenade to the Tower Festival Headland. There, the celebration will continue with a free family party with live music and family entertainment, leading up to a grand finale with the iconic celebrity Switch-On moment, followed by a Nickelodeon-themed light show on The Blackpool Tower and a burst of fireworks.

The whole event will be free to access with no tickets required.

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Last year, though the Switch-On was staged in front of a limited audience in the Tower Ballroom, thousands of people gathered on the Tower Festival Headland to watch it on a screen, and the previous year even when there was no screen.

“We know how much this celebration means to residents and visitors alike – and we are determined that this year everyone will get a chance to see the Switch-On moment and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic free party.

“Blackpool has a special relationship with Nickelodeon through their long partnership with Blackpool Pleasure Beach and through their involvement in live shows including SLIMEFEST and previous Switch-On events. We are thrilled that they will be bringing more of their magic to the biggest night in Blackpool’s events calendar.”

Following the launch of the giant Odyssey installation during 2022, the Illuminations manufacturing team are working on three brand new light installations for the coming season.

Four Adults Break and Shut Down Rugrats Flume Ride at Nickelodeon Universe UK

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a theme park located in the United Kingdom, in Blackpool. The Park has a ton of thrill coasters like ICON, The Big One, Grand National, Revolution, Infusion, Big Dipper, and more. Plus, they are home to Nickelodeon Land, where fans can ride child-friendly rides and meet characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more when they visit.

The Park describes the land as:

"Family thrills and memories that will last a lifetime are assured on Nickelodeon Land! It’s home to 12 amazing rides and a whole host of Nickelodeon characters from the world’s number one kid’s entertainment channel. Our characters are out on the Team Nick stage each and every day for you to meet & greet them and have your photograph taken!"

One popular ride in Nickelodeon Land is Rugrats Lost River. Here, Guests can experience the flume ride attraction alongside the Rugrats! The ride is described as “The adventure begins as you launch into the imaginations of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, and the gang and land right in the middle of a wild “Okey Dokey Jones” exploit. This time, the Rugrats are on a quest to find the elusive Temple of Spoon – a mythological and mouth-watering banana split sundae.”

Although the attraction is designed for children, some older NickHeads recently found themselves in a bit of a stir when they got stuck in the ride vehicle as it turned the corner. Since the attraction uses water to push the guest forward and they were lodged, they had to thrust forward to escape. Take a look at the video below.

The attraction had to temporarily shut down until the guests were able to escape. As you can see, the event definitely created quite the spectacle among others watching to see what was going on!

It sounds like all four guests were able to safely get off the attraction as there have been no reports indicating otherwise.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Invites Thrillseekers to Climb and Walk the Nickelodeon Streak

Forget walking the plank... rollercoaster fans are being offered to experience a brand new high - walking the woodie!

With thrill-seekers counting down the days to the return of a white-knuckle fix, bosses at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which will open for its 125th season on April 12, have unveiled an all new adventure for 2021 – climbing the park’s classic wooden rollercoaster, the Nickelodeon Streak!

The new activity has already proved a big hit, with limited tickets remaining for the three dates on May 13, June 17, and July 1.

Originally opened in 1933 and using the lift hill from Velvet Coaster, which was built in 1909, the ride was formerly known as The Rollercoaster.

It was renamed Nickelodeon Streak when it became a feature within the Nickelodeon Land area of the South Shore park.

Daredevils will be able to experience the highs and lows, treading the boards from a whole other level – with the tracks usually only reserved for the specialist ride engineers.

The tracks of the ride, first opened in 1933, have only previously been open to ride engineers.

The Walk The Woodie event will run for a limited time only guests are able to enjoy the exhilarating experience between May 13 to October 8. There are three slots available each day, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm, and each slot will be available to a select number of guests; up to four people per walk. Walk The Woodie is available for ages 12+ and tickets are priced at £65 each. Each slot offers a unique 90-minute encounter, which will take small groups on a part circuit walk of the historic wooden ride.

Harnesses, helmets and protective equipment will be provided but guests must wear suitable study footwear with good grip, such as walking boots.

Guests are also required to partake in a safety briefing beforehand and should allow 90 minutes for the experience.

With plenty of photo opportunities along the way, guests will learn the ins and outs of rollercoaster maintenance while enjoying stunning panoramic views of the theme park.

A Pleasure Beach spokesman said: “The Nickelodeon Streak, our classic wooden rollercoaster, has been thrilling guests since 1933, formally under its previous name but more recently in its distinctive orange guise.

“If you like adventure and want an exhilarating experience that gives a unique insight into how a wooden rollercoaster is maintained – with some great photo opportunities along the way – then this is the experience for you.”

The new offering is an addition to the park’s other walk up the Big One.

Those brave enough to put their best step forward have been advised the new walk is ‘physically demanding’, including steep climbs, drops, heights and uneven surfaces.

All will be equipped for the experience with harnesses, helmets and protective equipment. Two spectators are able to join the climbing guests free of charge.

The Nickelodeon Streak can be easily recognised from its bright orange paintwork and allows guests to fly around the perimeter of Nickelodeon Land, Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s children park.

As England prepares to enter a second lockdown to help halt the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) this November, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, home of Nickelodeon Land UK, in Lancashire and Nickelodeon Adventure Lakeside in Essex have announced temporarily closures in accordance to government guidelines.

SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol Now Available at Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

With lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic starting to ease in the UK, it's now the law to wear a face mask in many public spaces, including in shops and on public transport. To help make it easier for everyone to adjust to the "new normal", Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach has released a range of branded face masks featuring characters from the hit Nickelodeon properties, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol!

There are currently five Nickelodeon face masks available: SpongeBob and Patrick from SpongeBob SquarePants and Chase, Marshall and Skye from PAW Patrol. Each mask is available in a variety of sizes, suitable for kids and adults, with prices ranging for £5.00 – £6.00.

Your ticket includes Grotto, a gift from Santa for all children aged 11 and under, ice skating & skate hire, a FREE 2019 Diamond Pass (worth £40, with more than 200 days of fun to look forward to!) and a choice of tea/coffee/hot chocolate.

Guests can come in and out of the Grotto at any time between 10.30am & 4pm every Saturday and Sunday until the December 16. From the December 19, it will open daily until Christmas Eve.

Halloween at Pleasure Beach

For a 11 days, Blackpool Pleasure Beach will celebrate Halloween by turning the UK's Most ICONic Theme Park and the home of the UK's only Nickelodeon Land in a frightfest with the help of spooktacular decorations, including pumpkins and scarecrows, strange creatures (mostly staff) and monsters! (mainly the managers…) * their words, not mine ;)

All this Halloween, Blackpool Pleasure Beach will have delicious Halloween treats available around the park, from Halloween Toffee Apple Slushes to Krispy S-Kreme Donuts! The park will also host the brilliant ‘Creepy Hollow’ – set up in Planet Rock and brought to you by the excellent Blackpool Zoo. It’s an educational and interactive workshop where you can get up close and personal with stick insects, cockroaches, giant snails, snakes, lizards, and various weird and wonderful artefacts! PLUS it’s included in your entry to the park!

Vampire Pleasure Beach
Saturday 27th October is extra special!!

Blackpool Pleasure Beach are inviting all their guests to arrive in their creepiest and scariest costumes all day Saturday with competitions for best costumes for children and adults. They are also giving your favourite characters a monstrous makeover too!

From 4.00pm the park will transform into a ghastly and spine-chilling place where hordes of zombies and vampires, goblins and ghouls will be partying in the park with live music playing in the park's FY4 area around the Spooktacular Dancing Fountains.

Looking for an extra spooky experience? Try to find your way through the Spooky Maze where ghosts and ghouls are around every corner!

If you attend in fancy dress, adults receive a free alcoholic Vampire Blood Slush Cocktail and children receive a non-alcoholic Vampire Blood Slush Cocktail.

All of this and a hair-raising evening of Late Night Riding and a spectacular display of fireworks at 10.00pm!
