Apple is heavily tipped to introduce the first-ever iPhone foldable in 2026 and new reports this week suggest the company could make an important change with the device. Face ID has been part of Apple’s security setup on iPhones since the iPhone X series, but we could see that change with its first foldable, at least that’s what new reports say.

Apple has heavily relied on the 3D sensor based Face ID for many years but now it finally seems ready to bring Touch ID support for iPhones, especially for its foldables.

The new details come via a tipster who picked up the new rumours from Chinese platform Weibo. He claims the foldable iPhone will feature a punch-hole camera like many Android phones which means the notch needed to fit the Face ID camera won’t be available. So, instead we could see the Touch ID coming back to the iPhones after the iPhone SE 2022 model in the market next year.

Apple has continued to offer Touch ID on iPads while offering Face ID on the iPad Pro models for a few years. Using the new display tech from Samsung is also expected to help with crease on the screen and Apple could adopt Touch ID on the power button like its existing system.

Rumours about Apple entering the foldable phone market have been circulating for a while. A new report by suggests that the Cupertino-based tech giant is set to begin mass production of its first two foldable devices in the second half of 2026. In a research note shared with GF Securities, Jeff Pu reportedly stated that both devices have entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn.

The battery is likely to have a capacity of 5,000mAh which might not match the levels offered by other brands. Both foldable devices are expected to arrive in the global market by 2027 which might become clearer as we get closer to the launch timeline.
