GYMNAST OF THE YEAR
Sofia Macias
Kenston, sophomore
There are years during which deciding this honor can be a chore, even when it’s based strictly on postseason performance. When a gymnast goes and captures the all-around state title? Those years are no-brainers. Macias rendered it the latter with her historic postseason making her the obvious choice for 2025 News-Herald gymnast of the year, the fifth Kenston gymnast to earn the honor in the last six seasons. The Bombers’ sophomore took first in all-around at the state meet with a score of 37.975. She was second on bars (9.500), third on beam (9.500), fifth on floor (9.425) and seventh on vault (9.550). In addition, she was district champion all-around with a 37.900, sweeping all events but vault, including a 9.725 on beam. Macias is the fourth gymnast from a News-Herald coverage area school all-time to reign in state all-around, joining Mentor’s Kayla Kosmerl (2012), Mayfield’s Amy Bauer (1991) and Chardon’s Michelle Davies (1984).
