Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, according to a news release.
Blood is used to help accident and burn victims, surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer or other chronic illnesses.
There is currently an emergency shortage of platelets and type O blood, the release said.
Mercy Health is urging community members to donate blood, ensuring it is available for life-saving measures.
“From start to finish, the blood donation process takes about an hour out of your day,” said Julie Kitzler, laboratory director at Mercy Health — Lorain, in the release. “In that time, you can help save multiple lives through your single donation.
“Donating blood is a selfless act and provides critical support to patients in great need. We encourage everyone who can give the gift of life to schedule an appointment to donate blood.”
In partnership with the American Red Cross, Mercy Health hosts regular blood drives.
Mercy Health — Lorain Hospital, 3700 Kolbe Road, will host a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. March 28 in the Ross Conference Center.
